murder by brio - indigo competition

Hi there…

I have entered the jan - february competition named toys and games over at the indigo site… And I think I have reached the point in the project where I could use some help regarding composition, colors and so on… I am not very good at those think myself because I have mainly focused on modelling and abonded my projects before I reached that state  But I will try to finish this one  But here are the pictures…

Indigo render:

and closeup of the train:

As I said I am mostly seeking advice regarding composition and colors, but if you think of something else, then please just go ahead…

Like the models, however i dont think there is any sense of urgency, you should position the legomen to have some movement. SUch as someone running down the platform, to the rescue? The guy partially hidden by the station is my favorite, he strikes me a being a ringleader, or at least an evil onlooker, (if legomen could rub thier hands together, i think he’d be doing it!), his look/head should maybe reflect this?
Plus the guy on the bench is alittle out of place, or at least needs a decent hat.

All and all, i like the way you’ve done things so far, especially the tape, looks real!

Thanks for the reply

I think your a right about your points… It need a little more action… I will see if I can make the lego men seem more dynamic… But hopefully it will help a little when I texture them… Some nice expressions on there face will hopefully spice the thing up a little…

The DOF seems to be a bit exaggerated and overdone. Tone that down a tad.

The tape holding down the guy on the track is too reflective. Looks more like metal than tape.

Great plastic shader though. It all looks perfect in that regard.

BgDM

Thanks for your suggestions… I have just started a render where I have changed most the things you mentioned BgDM… I haven’t made the scene more dynamic yet, but I will probably look into that this weekend… I will upload the new render in around 5 hours when you can actually see what it looks like

And here is the render…

I still have some normal problems I can’t seem to get rid of, but I will look into that…

And I still need to texture everything but the train :eyebrowlift:

Post 100:yes:

Looks really good to me. Almost photorealistic. The things that strike me most are 1)the DoF still seems like too much. 2) The second piece of tape seems like it should have some small wrinkles in it, tape usually isn’t that straight. The first piece of tape looks great. Also, the back edge of the second piece has a black line along it. I assume this is the normal problem?

Lastly, just as a composition thing, you might could change the color or the appearance of the guy taped to the train tracks, just to make him seem different and to make him stand out more.

Good luck in the competition!

It looks like you’ve got the materials down pat.

The pants of the LEGO toys are a little bit weird.
And the LEGO toy standing most close to the camera has a weird ‘artifact’ on his wrist.

Okay another update… This time I tried using a sunlight instead of a exr map… I also toned down on the burn and the dof… So hopefully it looks better…

I will model the bottom of the legs before the next update… I must have stared on that image for to long not noticing that :stuck_out_tongue: I also made some small modifications on the second piece of tape as suggested by frodo2975… I know about the artifact on the wrist but I can’t figure out how to get rid of it:( I thought it was because of overlapping faces, but I corrected them before this render, and they are still there… I will start the texturing now, so there will probably be a update again in a few days…

btw thanks for all your suggestions… It is really helping me creating a better final product

this last render doesn’t look as photo-realistic as the one before, but it’s still fantastic work!

Don’t know if this will help…

Thanks Guitar87

Thanks  That will make the texturing much easier

looks really good. im so glad you made this because i love brio, used to have a massive collection as a kid and you have inspired me to create my own brio in blender.

I’m finally back with another update… I had some troubles getting the uvmaps showing up right, so I kinda lost interest in this project… But I figured I had to finish a project sometime :o

I have toned down the specularity on the wall after ths render, but if you guys think anything else is wrong please tell me… I only have 10 days left

OWNED!

I like it! This is exactly what I was hoping it would be from the title.

I love the electrical tape.

Heh, that’s awesome. Still, though, if you’re looking for something, I notice they don’t have holes in the feet. Still though, the rest of this is looking good.

Bevel the torsos and the shoulders of the figures.
Get back a very light touch of the DOF you had in the previous version.
Add a very gentle bump map to the train surfaces- they are likely not made of super-smooth plastic, but painted wood with a barely perceptible grain texture.

As far as the tape goes, I am sorry I don’t have good advice how to make it better, but it currently is not convincing to me. Maybe reduce the reflectivity and increase specularity- or add some spec only lights that affect only the tape. My eyes aren’t getting enough information about it’s shape- it’s just a patch of red.

I really like the overall lighting and sense of space. Good luck in the competition.

Thanks for your comments

It’s always nice to hear what other think should be changed… I will try to fix the issues you have mentioned in the weekend so I can finish the render in time

Very nice scene. I like the color and perspective. My only suggestion is to rotate the victim 90 degrees. Usually when you run people over with trains you run them over sideways.

The render on the first post is much better then the latest image on post #14.

The lighting and setup is brilliant, perfect composition, color, and overall feel. I love the depth of field, stick with it.
