Music video animation: Like a Sir

Moo-Ack!

I was commissioned to make another one of GameChap’s minecraft music video parodies, this time to PSY’s “Gentleman”. Check it out on their channel below!

I also finished putting together a very quick behind the scenes video; while not exclusively blender, it shows a few tidbits about the way I work that hopefully is interesting. I make the BTS videos really fast pace because analytics for previous ones show the average viewer has the attention span of about 30 seconds – I figure I may as well pack as much content in that time frame as possible

I would love to get any feedback! This ended up being a rather rushed project again, so things like the animation of the 3D girls was not particularly stellar and I didn’t have time to do fun compositing things that would have made, for example, the glowing bow and arrow nicer. The smoke simulations though, thanks to that mentioned tutorial and the quick setup command (how have I never heard of that before?!), I was amazed at how quickly I could put together smoke and fire simulations that actually looked decent. Definitely worth a play around!

Thanks for posting, really nice. Impressive viewcount on Youtube too! What sort of time scale was the project and were you working with other artists? did you animate the whole thing? - you said in the video for the BG parts you were responsible for.

Another great animation, Patrick! You’re definitely getting better and better as you complete more of these projects!
I really enjoyed the BTS video as well! Always fun to see how you approached the work, and dealt with challenges.

Kudos on the green screen work as well. I’ll admit, I hate rotoscoping so much, I flat out refuse to use crappy greenscreen footage. How hard would it have been for them to move her over 2 or 3 feet and shoot another take?

And especially congratulations on partnering with NODE, that sounds like it will be a big deal! I’m sure that will bring you a larger audience to see your great work. Was that something you heard about and looked up, or did they find you?

Thanks guys! I’m glad you enjoy it, and it’s great to hear others think I’m improving

Well, though I’m not encouraged to deal out too many details on the matter, originally I was on the team with another animator Mokazon. My role was the VFX artist, responsible only for the explosions, water simulations, effects etc. But for various reasons the other animator dropped out early on in the project so I took over everything. As far as what I was responsible, the only things I didn’t do were:

  • The sets of the mansion and Village (though I still had to add details later)
  • The blocked out animation of the first 12 seconds, shot at 0:32, and the first half of the shot at 1:10; in general even for these, I had to go back and update the animations to what my client wanted to see
  • The base rigs for the main characters, while I added things like the fingers and extra hat controls

Having seen Matthew’s setup though, I did finally decide to buckle down and ry “imported minecraft worlds” instead of building them in blender for the later scenes, which ended up being a good time saver. So I guess I got that from him as well

As for the greenscreen, well I can assure you it was quite the back and forth process. Originally I was given wmv compressed versions of the footage (!!), but after some persuasion I was at least able to get the raw file. They didn’t have easy access with the Dancer I guess, it was just a one-time recording and hand over the files sort of deal. Oh well

And thanks! Yes I’m excited about the Node Partnership. Like GameChap, they had reached out to me first (apparently they saw one of the previous music videos I worked on), so I really should be counting my blessings for the opportunity.

That’s awesome, Patrick, thanks for the reply! It’s funny how interconnected the YouTube community is.
Your double hat setup actually helped me a lot for the video I’m currently finishing up, which will save me a ton of hassle. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before, so thank you!
I shared your video on the Classy Dog Films Facebook, so look out for a tidal wave of new views (like, at least one or two.)
Perhaps in the future we may collaborate on a video together. We would be happy to contribute to a project for your channel!
