I have an empty object that is parented to some objects. I use the empty to move the child objects around. A little while ago, something happened, and when I select the empty in the scene collection tab thing, it doesn’t show up in the viewport, and when I hit g or r to transform it, it doesn’t move. When I change the position or rotation values in the transform window however, it works fine. I need to move them along a local axis, so this is not workable. Can anyone tell me why the empty doesn’t appear when selected?
Have you hid it maybe? And how are you selecting it in the outliner?
No, it’s definitely not hidden. That’s the first thing I looked for.
See like here, I have one of the empties selected, but it doesn’t light up in the viewport. It doesn’t move when I hit g.
Could you take a screen grab of the overlays popover? Perhaps you have the Extras turned off there.
FWIW, I personally would like a script that toggled all the visibility/isolation things, ON/OFF/SWAP.
Sometimes you just need that to figure out what the heck is going on.
To save people hours of confusion who might also be google searching around for why their empties aren’t visible or usable…

At some point you may have selected (almost) everything in your scene and accidentally hit Numpad /, which doesn’t ‘hide’ anything, but focuses only on the selected objects. I use it pretty frequently for single objects, but never for more than one thing at a time, so it really confused me when Empties that I added through the Shading Workspace weren’t visible or usable back in the Layout Workspace, but NEW Empties worked just fine.
I know this topic is years old and there’s probably rules against necro’ing old topics, but I made the account just to post this because it never got solved, and I couldn’t find answers anywhere else.
Happy Blendering
Thanks for adding some ‘local perspective’ to the community chat here…
