My Female model (half-asian?)

I’ve updated this thread some. Check near the bottom, or wherever the most recent stuff shows up on your browsers.

On Freenode I’m known as Kenshin^. This is the 1st “full fledged” human model I’m actually kinda pleased with since I’ve started on my project. 1st I tried Toon style as seen in a sketch I did before I really got into Blender that heavily. http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/2680/girl2b1fr.th.jpg
Before I was at a loss, just futzing around with the various tools, nothing I’d want to post. :o

Given that the story that I want to animate is of the comic-book/superhero genre. I figured it’d be best to try modeling her in a sort of painted Comic style. As seen in these examples.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/1079/usm674di.th.jpg or (Anime) http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4748/lw1481du.th.jpg

Also a fan of Japanese Animation, and the animated Batman series. More old than the new, but it’s possibly a little too stylized for my liking right now.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7729/14zx0.th.jpg An example of one of the people from that show.

I read that “Better face tutorial” on here when it was still Elysiun. That was a very good starting point for making a head/face that looks human, and not alien/ape-like. Although it has I’ve added, evolved, and modified my head model to something more detailed. Let me clarify. I’m not going for photo-realism. That usually just make the characters look “creepy”. So, I’m going for more like a blend of “Toon”, and realism.
(If that makes any sense…)

I went through a phase of trying out the particle hair system.
One from 2.41… http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1604/k2e5m2l2m2v5c8o8h3a7b3t7b4o3gf5.th.jpg In 2.42…http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3254/toonf54h5hosahp5.th.jpg
Blame the “odd” hair color on my Anime fan background.

Thing is… It practically brought my computer to its’ knees to render that out, it didn’t acutally follow the curve guides/style that I wanted, and finally. It kept going through places where it shouldn’t. Like her ears, one time it even came through her eyes.

So, I moved to poly/mesh hair. Much more moldable, and much less of a strain on my computer than the particle hair…
Older Head/WIP Hair:http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/7015/toonf54h5n7o8dqg1.th.jpg Newest: http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5985/head5jo8.th.jpg

Here’s an older render in Toon/Anime style…
Front:http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5663/animegzf4.th.jpg Diagonal:http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2203/animegdju1.th.jpg

Cool, but I have an odd problem… The more I try to go for Toon style, the more realistic the model becomes, and vice versa. So, I figured if I aim for the middle. I’ll be just fine.

Older WIP Body: http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/206/6h3fgrey10n5le4.th.jpg Newest: http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2682/tf56b1c2wq9.th.jpg

The “Newest Render” shows when I was “playing” with lighting, and textures again.

I’ve also completed a very simple/crude armature to test out animating my Isz model. Just in the process of weight painting it.

ARGH! Took a look from a “bottom” camera. Looking up from below, and seen that while “her” lips and chin look good from the side & front views. They look bad from below. The lips aren’t curved/rounded, but more like a mountain with peaks, and valleys. Same way with the chin. Looks more like an anthill, than a chin. :frowning:

So… I’m going back “basics”. Starting over on the face, but leaving the body alone… for now. Perhaps even going back to my original “intent/inspiration” Anime & Comics…

Especially since it’s hard to find ref. photos that would be good for both front & side views. Usually there’s some kinda smile, 7/8ths side view, or head tilted up/down without paying a monthly fee to a photo site. That and sometimes, the people’s pics that DO match the 1st criteria, don’t really look the way I want the model to look. So, I figured that if I can’t FIND reference pics, I’ll make ‘em by drawing them. Which made me realize that I need to take a lil’ “refresher course” on drawing. :o

Looks good, what method did you use to model her?

Box, extrusion, spline, nurbs, wwwaaaahhtt? =)

Looks really good. You have a little center line issue to clear up. If you are having problems doing so throw up a wire I’m sure someone can give you some tips.

Also it looks like you might have some normal flipping ahead of you when looking at the neck.

Well… A little bit of everything. It really depends on which part you’re asking about. Head & nose was made using primitives, but the face was made using edge loops, and just plain push ‘n’ pull of verts until it looked right. Hair, and boots was extrusion. The torso was a mixture like the head & face. The hand was kinda box, loops, and extrusion. It just depended on what method made sense at the time…

Yeah, I have to clear the center line issue up, but it’s due to the materials used, or something about the face/head itself. It’ll probably clear itself up when I UV the head/face to get better precision with the lips, eyeliner, color, and lines of the face.

It’s not a normal flipping issue at the neck. The neck looks like that, 'cause the isn’t attached to the body, yet. I model the body parts in sections. That way I can see all around 'em when I’m working on 'em. When I get done, and “pleased” with a section. I attach the sections, since I’m done working on 'em. Although, sometimes I keep experimenting to see if I can make it “even better”. I’ve been called a “perfectionist”… :o

Speaking of which here’s the latest experimentation. It’s the one on the right, #7.

What do you think? Better/worse?

I’ve made some changes to the model, like adding more clothing. I know… Boo… :stuck_out_tongue: But in order to be able to show the eventual animation to people without them thinking I’m trying to emulate DOA: Xtreme Beach V’ball 1 & 2… I figured I’d better. Although, I do agree with his philosophy of working on a concept/model 'till you’re pleased with it, and not just to crank it out like other game makers do… Then again, maybe he was pressured to release DOAX2 early, 'cause that hair and “breast physics” are horrible. I mean the hair actually goes THROUGH the shoulder, neck, and even breasts.

Here’s a previous render of my model: http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4394/tf55agp0.th.jpg
and here’s the latest render: http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7092/tf56b1bie1.th.jpg

The difference is that while I was working on my Isz, I noticed the lighting wasn’t right. So, I changed it, and it not only improved the look of the Isz, but the female as well. At least, I think, and hope so…

Although, I forgot 1 VERY important step. Like actually how to learning to animate a model. :o So, I went about making a new model, since it’d probably be better to learn with a much more simple model. Kinda like walking before running.

So, I recalled those creatures from “The Maxx” called an Isz. They were basically mouths with arms, hands, legs and feet. The dark ones had sharp teeth. Right now mine’s almost finished, but it’s a regular Isz. Here’s an “extreme closeup” render of it:

What do ya thinK? Any help, or pointers to character rigs, or animation would be appreciated… Currently, I’m reading the Summer of Documentation about those 2 subjects. Which some helpful person pointed out in the chat room. I’m trying to do stuff quicker, since that means I can make even MORE models, and MORE animations with those models to show everyone. Once I learn how to animate, that is.

I’ve made some changes to the model, like adding more detailed/textured clothing.

Here’s a shot of the latest “full body” render of my model: http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7287/tf56b1e6b8h5b7bnp3.th.jpg

Since that shot. I was going to texture the hair mesh, but after taking a good look at it. I’ve discovered that it’s all garbled, and tangled into a rat’s nest. So, I’m taking another crack at it.

Here’s a head shot in both styles…
Animation/Painted comic: http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/7774/tf56b1e6b8h5b7g8i8ya9.th.jpg More Real: http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/5317/tf56b1e6b8h5b7g8j3lb9.th.jpg

http://img307.imageshack.us/img307/5472/iszb5shr7.th.jpgWhat do ya thinK? Any help, or pointers to character rigs, or animation would be appreciated… I’m trying to do stuff quicker, since that female took like a year or more to make, and people around me “off-line” are getting on my case about taking “too long”.

Mmm. It looks down to the hips, then all of a sudden it goes weird. The legs are too skinny and come off the hips in an angular way, making the hips look smaller than the shoulders, and for a female that’s a mistake, it makes her look too butch. Also, it doesn’t look like her head is attatched to her body, there’s a funny line across her neck.

Anyway, the model almost could look very good. It just has a couple bugs in it.

Thing is. I’ll try making them kinda larger, but I’m not making any “guarantees”. The character was designed to be “in shape” from working out.

Well, I kinda put them like that 'cause unless their in the military. People rarely stand with their legs pulled close together. There’s usually a little bit of angle when “at ease”. Although, guess I could save that section for when I make a guy, or if a different female is supposed to be butch.

There’s a very good reason why it looks like it’s not attached. That’s because it isn’t.
I started on the head, then when I thought I was “done”. I started on the body. Figured it’d be easier to work with that way. You can’t see it in the render, but her feet/boots aren’t attached either. I figure once I get those sections the way I want 'em. Then I’ll attach 'em, and possibly UV map 'em… Well, the “realistic one” at least until “toon bug” bites me again.

Muscular looks different, these just look a little too small. Also, I didn’t say ‘at an angle’ I said ‘angular’ I mean too sharp for female anatomy. Actual female anatomy–no matter how totally ripped it is–is different, skeletally, than male anatomy.

Hmm… Alright, then how 'bout this one? http://img434.imageshack.us/img434/3105/tf56b1e6b8h5b7g8j7bxw7.th.jpg http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/2309/tf56b1e6b8h5b7g8j7bsxp5.th.jpg
Made the hips, and thighs a little thicker, and rounder. Also gave a little bit more of a “tummy” so that it isn’t perfectly flat.
Although it’s not in response to your critique, but I also worked some on the hair. Changed the style/design some. Changed the color, also. It used to be grey, and my Mother thought that meant she was a senior citizen…

After looking at the bottom view/looking from below. Like if she would be looking up. Maybe into the sky… I noticed that face model had a problem. That the chin, and lips looked more like a beak than a human’s lips & chin. So, after searching the web for a couple days, and getting frustrated. I drew another sketch to use as reference to start “her” face over again.

Here’s the new drawing/sketch:
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1987/ayasketch33bez3.th.jpg

The model that’s come from that so far… Although, there’s like 2 “realism” renders, and an anime/toon one: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/4159/tf61dviewsqb1.th.jpg

Still trying to see what “looks best/feels right”. :D.
