my first blender image

Hello everyone! I’m impressed by some of the stuff being posted here; both the capabilities of Blender and the artistic talents displayed are quite astonishing. I’ve only just started playing around with this program… actually it’s my first attempt at 3d modelling. The swamp picture below is what came out when I decided to put together my first actual scene:

I’d like some pointers and tips.

Nice first post.

Some suggestions:

  1. Turn down the spec slider in the materials for the mushroom. Mushrooms are pretty flat and don’t really reflect any light.
  2. Some better lighting would make this look great. I don’t know what your experience level is with lighting, but only the Spot Lights can cast shadows in Blender. Try addign a few spots and see what you get.

I always thought of making a mushroom house image, (as I think everyone who does CG has thought).

Welcome to Blender too.

BgDM

Great !! I really love this, nice colors and use of fog.
For your first pic that’s really impressive…, put some more textures on it and work a little on the other (some bump and spec maps, hint:-> Landis has written a good tutorial 'bout texturing here on Elysiun), thats all I can say.
While the most users on Elysiun only model one object and render it, you’ve done a whole scene, therefore all my thumbs up !!!

BgDM: I wanted to give the mushroom a slightly “wet” feel, hence the reflection… I’ll fiddle with the settings some more though.

I have virtually no experience with lightning… I’ve used one spotlight (as you can see the grass/reeds cast a shadow on the mushroom wall) and one hemi light. Maybe I should replace the hemi with some more spots? What’s the hemi/sun lamps usually used for?

Olaf: When it comes to objects I guess I go for quantity rather than quality  Oh and I’ll have a look at that tutorial… I find texturing pretty tough, as I’m using a trial-and-error approach most of the time.

Thanks for the comments guys.

your modeling looks pretty good, I’d work a little on the lighting like BgDM said and the texture like olaf mentioned. Also I like the slug on the shroom in the back. And welcome to a world of long nights and frustration, exitement, and just general fun.

Edit: Just read your other post, for a wet look try using some noise with spec turned on. You have to play with it but I like the way it comes out. Also try this out http://www.blendedplanet.com/tutorials.htm there is some pretty good tuts on lots of things. Good luck

When it comes to objects I guess I go for quantity rather than quality

I think in your pic quantity equals quality or vice versa   .

Hi,

That is very good for a first image.
The lgothing and texturing need work,
but the modelling is rather good.

3D Lighting and Compositing is an
excellent book for lighting. www.premierpressbooks.com
(they used to be called primatech, so they therefore also
have the blender 2.0 manual…)

Great first scene! very good use of fog, too!
welcome to the wild world of Blender

Most impressive first scene  The only thing I might add to whats
already been said is that I would make the door and window a
little less square and more organic looking if you know what I mean.
Perhaps distorting them by bulging them in the middle.

GreyBeard

Yeah I know exactly what you mean… the door is probably the one thing I’m not at all happy with in this image, I’m surprised no one mentioned it at first :stuck_out_tongue:
