As for the spot on the apple, did you recalc your normals in edit mode? YOu do that by selecting all the verts with the “A” key and then press CTRL+N. That may fix it.
I think Ton said on blender.org that the soft shadows “when raytracing” are basicly calculated like there’s a group of lamps… I saw some examples of the “wrongness” of that which rather looked like your spots. So… just hang on… it’s just an early bug… that effect will go.
I love the apple, but what shaders did you use on everything else? They look slightly plasticy (lambert?)
In my opinion two things stand out immediately, lighting and scale of objects in your scene.
Lighting
Where is your key lighting coming from? The window? A lamp on the ceiling? Elsewhere? In your render it appears to be from a light source behind the camera, which is fine. But the shadows cast in the oppsite direction suggest light coming in from the window. One or the other needs to be the key light. That will determine where your shadow will come from.
Scale
The apple and cup appear to be out of proportion when compared to the wall, table, and curtain/window. In relation to each other the apple needs to be slightly smaller than the cup.
Modeling
I’ve already mentioned scale. Your apple and cup are well done. I think the table could be wider. You could also consider using additional bevels to add details to the table top and legs. See this tutorial for ideas.
Texturing
I think the apple is just great. The table also. I think the floor and wall tile need work. The textures on those objects repeat and they hurt the good work you’ve done in this scene.
Overall this is a very strong effort. Make some adjustments and you will have an even better piece. See my comments in this thread to address what I’ve raised as concerns.
Thanks ec2, your links are really helpful. I’d try improve it later, currently I’m stuffed with other things.
I think the light from the window should be stronger, but that would cast a strong shadow towords the camera. I thought that was ugly though. I was told that when taking photo, you should face the sun intead of the opposite. Anyway I will try that and see the result.
As to the Material, I really have no idea. I mean I know what those parameter means, but I don’t know how they should appear. I know metal should be shiny and cloth should not, but that’s it. If only blender has a preset of materials from which I can start with.
And yes the apple is too big. My scene started from it and I thought that was good, and leave it that big unintentionally. I’ll fix it. My roommate said the apple don’t look fresh, just about to rot. what do you think ?
That is pretty good,…the only thing I’d change is the base board texture, to something more plain, and possibly a touch of detail, like a nail or something.
No problem. I’m glad to help. I look forward to the update. I understand being “stuffed”.
Lighting is always a challenge. I’m sure you will find the right set up with experimentation. Regarding the curtain material, it looks good as is at the moment. The apple may need specular or raytraced reflections, depending on your preference.
You know, I haven’t given this link out in a while. Check out Leigh van der Byl’s Texturing for Dummies series. It is one of the best free CG resources on the Internet. It is written for Lightwave but can be applied to Blender also. Cross reference this with the material and texture information in Blender’s documentation, and you should be able to see where to apply setting adjustments.
ok, now I modified the materials , and remade the table.
I think the lighting is ok, and leave it there. I tried to turn on the light form the window, but that made the scene look ugly.
I have no clue about the textures now. I tried procedure textures, but got no luck. I’ll try to improve it next time.
can’t stop blending even I have lots of things to do, oooh. :-?
turned on light from window quite a bit. I want to simulate the effect of the sun, but can’t make the shadows more parallel. I need to move the light far away behind, but then the wall stands between. ooh.
And I’ll keep update once in a while until someone notice me again
<edit>Oh no freewebs forbids direct linking. Where can I find a good free web space? I can’t even create a folder today because it uese IE style javascript and I was using mozilla-firebird. </edit>
I just ctrl-click ed to make the top line, smooth several times, and extruded down. then smoothed the bottom line several times. with subsurf 1. that’s all about modelling the curtain.
everything else is texture. In a word, hand-made. 8)
ikea is a store that sells stuff to decorate ur home…it’s a cool store…u need to go there when ur bored with 3d…just take a break…come on…just go right now…it’ll be worth it…check out their curtains…
