Hi All, I’m still in my Noob blender stage where I’m following tutorials etc. I work as a graphic designer for a small sign shop and I was asked by a Jagermeister representative to come up with a concept for wrapping a mini fridge. To keep the jager nice and cold.
The design is nothing crazy, but I’m pretty happy with my render. So is my customer. Is there anything I could do better next time? One thing I do know is that I could have put better caps on the jager bottles, but I skipped that to save time as I don’t really have a lot of time to fart around. Basically a speed model.
I used a glossy shader mixed with transparent shader for the glass, as the glass shader was too noisy. I always seem to have issues with the glass shader for panes of glass. Not sure if I’m just missing a setting? or?..
The result is/was constrained and it’s hard to think of any improvements that you’re not already aware of.
Only positive points about the render:
Prioritized workflow. You gave the priority to the task at hand (showcase the wrapping) and kept it simple
The shot follows the first priority
Noise levels are low and non-distracting
Might not be obvious to the viewer/client but it’s an important thing there’s a Jäger bottle even though you weren’t happy with the cap. It shows the scale and the viewer immediately knows it without thinking or guessing
Maybe if you had more time to work on it you could’ve tried other compositions to get a better shot but without contradicting the mentioned points. Perhaps showing possible product design or color variations, or giving the shot more variation by perhaps placing more refined bottle model(s) in there.
Here’s what I mean. Don’t pay attention on what this one is showcasing or how well, just showing another composition.
Primary read. If you’re showcasing different design and/or colors, this would be the one you choose and think is the best. It could include the scale reference to spice it up a bit
Secondary read. Could showcase the second best design or different aspect of the first one
Tertiary read. Other variations
What those items are placed on or in what environment is not the point either. It could still be a studio backdrop or something else.
Looks very nice, but I have a couple of suggestions that might improve it a bit:
1: The fridge it self have some very hard edges, and I would try with a very small bevel on those to round them out a bit.
2: The bottles them self looks like there is no bottle cap on them?
3: There is this rounded reflection over the glass front, that I find a bit distracting. Maybe you could try to make that a little less visible or change the camera angle a bit?
I work at a tradeshow booth construction and design company and I have to do a lot of similar renders. Totally agree with JA12 on the prioritized workflow, it accomplishes exactly what it needs to without too much overkill. I’m not sure if you’re doing a matte overlam or not, but the wrap seems a little flat. Beveling the edges will help with that, do a round bevel (4 or 5 segments) to pick up a highlight and read the gloss profile better. As far as the Jager bottle, it certainly works and does a good job for scale. Personally, I would have spent the time to make it a little more detailed. I know you aren’t trying to sell the Jager, but you are trying to sell it to someone who does, who knows their product and will appreciate if you get it right. It’s certainly not a big thing, but it can help sell it. When I am doing a clothing rack in a booth, I make sure to hang clothing that the client actually makes on the rack. It takes a little bit to get the textures gathered up, but it’s worth it.
Thanks Sterling, ya, In retrospect I should have finished the bottles. I’ll probably just print the wrap part and use a gloss lam. to save time not having to weed out the Jager logos. Bevelling the edges and putting a bit more gloss on the wrap part would have been better…
I hope I get to do some of these up, the alcohol reps always give away their product and I love me some jager. lol
So, an update because I thought it was funny. I got an e-mail from the rep. My render must really suck, because he goes “ooh I like the bottles on the glass!! Can we do that?” DOH! The bottles are inside the damn fridge! The whole reason I did a rendering was to give him a better idea of what it will look like. Apparently I failed. boo.
