Hi guys! Here is a render of an retro TV I recently modelled.
I rendered the TV In a room scene I recently made.
Everything is modelled by me and rendered by me.
Now I just need your opinion of the render. What do u think?
I’d kill the bump on the woodgrain. Most woodgrain on televisions of this style was a flat veneer with no depth. That being said, you might want to look into the shape of the corners. It’s impossible to wrap veneer around compound curves like that. Also look into more separating seams where the materials change, different materials are different components on real TVs, and those different components should all have seams between them. Check out this photo and look at how the woodgrain terminates before changing to a different material:
Much better, I’d do some more creasing on the corners and edges, especially on that grille. You might want to poke those holes all the way through in the grille, sound has to come out, after all. If you don’t want to commit the polygons to that, you could just set the holes to a black material too.
This is a definite improvement, much more believable.
I like the mesh behind the grille, that’s a good look. The only other thing jumping out at me right now is the color of the screen itselt, CRTs had more of a grey color when off.
Good work and really good improvements on the model and the materials.
I don’t know if you are all set with the lighting. But these reflections on the screen including that big white patch are very distracting. Instead of mesh lights I’d try to illuminate it with an HDRI or to build a more pleasing studio lighting with softer lights.
The plastic wood imitation is very believable. And also the “metal” parts. They look like plastic also. This is a good thing if you were going for that, of course.
Thanks for comment minoribus
The lighting isn’t set up yet and I was thinking to place the TV to some sort of scene with different lighting when it is ready.
But here is a test render with a HDRI image:
That’s good. I am a noob to the forums, and my modeling skills need some (a lot!) of work, but can I suggest, if you are going for realism, that you either a) tier the antennae (i.e. thick @ bottom, thinner in middle, thinnest near top view, or b) if the ends of the antennae are going to extend past the top of the render to give them a small base? Just a thought, but very nice for what it is.
Also, to your last post on the color change: those old-style TVs can go either way; some that were made with the faux wood were dark, and others had that plastic-y brightness of color that you never find in natural wood. So I guess to that, it depends on what you personally are going for.
I would put the TV on a small bookshelf or something like that, rather than on the floor.
Also, the volume/tuning knobs look a bit squarish since you are only using 4 vertices around and the subsurf modifier doesn’t make perfect cirlces.
Lastly, I would give the thin trim pieces around the knobs a shiny material instead of the grey material which blends in with the surrounding panel. Unless they really are supposed to be all one piece, of course!
