My Problems With Game Boy Advance Games

I’m almost certain I want to buy a Game Boy Advance SP. (No, SP doesn’t stand for “syrupy potion.”) However, I’m a little concerned with a few issues. For one, I want to play the upcoming “Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hand,” which almost requires you to play outside. Cool, except I rarely ever go outside. The only time I do is at school, where they “confiscate” “distractions” and force your parents to get it at their bookstore. (More on this issue may come in a later post.)

Second, many people seem to have that old premonition that it’s a toy (similar to what everyone thought about Atari systems, cell phones, movies with real sound and horseless carriages). What grounds do I base this on, aside from the fact that my school would probably “confiscate” your action figures if you took them? The games: Plenty of Mary-Kate & Ashley games, lots of “PDA-for-kids” games (there’s even one based on that damned Lizzie McGuire show coming soon), and very few truly cool games. Hous… er, Ariz… uh, elYsiun, we have a problem.

Third, I’m more than willing to sell my Game Boy Pocket & Game Boy Color to make up for the costs. However, I know of very few places that would buy them, and eBay won’t work—I’d be surprised if, after selling off my Game Boy Pocket, I could afford an ice cream at McDonald’s with how low they were selling ($7.00! The world’s nuts! It used to be high-tech). The GBC also wasn’t selling for much (somewhere around maybe $35.00 US), and the few games I own are either too good or too awful to sell.

And worst of all, no matter what games I buy, the one game everyone should play isn’t on it despite how notably suitable it would be: NetHack. I love this game. I always die, but I keep trying. Now, what does this say? “Replayability” and “addiction” come to mind. And what’s perfectly suited for that? Not a bulky PC, nor even a CD with the game and WinZip on it. No, the GBA could very well do the game, and since it’s a rather small game (in file size—you wouldn’t believe how big the game actually seems) at 4.38 megs unzipped and in a file folder for Windows, they could pack in so much stuff (like open source, customizable interface like tiles and ASCII graphics, and so much more extra silly stuff in the “hallu” stage your character sometimes enters your head explodes just thinking about it), I say that it’s a perfect fit. “NetHack” can beat other dungeon hacks, like “Rogue” and “Diablo,” any day 24/7. Yet not even those games are ported! Give me “NetHack” or give me death! (Or “Diablo.” But I prefer “NetHack.”)

Rogue is older than nethack… at least the original. Rogue started the whole thing, actually.

you should try angband if you like that style of game.

Here’s a list of some awesome GBA games:

Golden Sun
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Fzero Maximum Velocity
Pokemon Saffire or Ruby (yes, they’re fun!)
Mario Kart

er, sorry, thought i had a big list. This is all i can think of. Golden sun has the best graphics and gameplay that i’ve seen on GBA, HUGE use of particle systems.

Pooba

Bwahahahahahaha…
You really set yourself up for that one…

If your into older RPG classics, Phantasy Star Collection, which includes Phantasy Star I-III, and the PS series, in my opinion, had a more epic, creative, and fun start than the FF ever did, and if it were not for the only sequel being an online one (which isnt bad, just not a single-player, “role-playing” game…) so many years after the last “true” RPG in the series was made, I think it would still be one of the best games ever!

yeah! I want the Phantasy Star series and the new Golden Sun! I am dying to get a hold to those (too bad games come SOOO late here)

Try this games on GBA:
Jimmy Neutron 1 (some multiplayer background created with Blender)
Jimmy Neutron vs Jimmy Negatron (all levels edited with Blender)

Strange… I thought I’d replied earlier.

I’ve tried ZangbandTK from The Underdogs. Does that count?

I’ve also tried “Rogue,” but I didn’t really get into it.

I keep hearing about “Golden Sun.” I might try them.
F-Zero might also be worth a shot.
Pokemon… of course it’s going to be fun, but I still say there should be a more freeform Pokemon adventure.
Mario Kart almost sounds kiddie, but I guess that’s worth a shot.
I’ll also try out games like “Advance Wars” and “Wario Ware.”

VK: It’s true. I rarely go outside. That’s why I have such a ridiculously high postcount.

Hiachi: Ooh, Phantasy Star… must put that on my list as well…

Fred_Pyo: Okay, I’ll take that as a sign that those games are good.

endi: No offense, but I’d prefer not to play games just because they were made partially in Blender, I’d want to play them because they’re fun. I don’t want to play “Jimmy Neutron” games. That kid’s hair freaks me out.

Cube Fan, do you do anything besides rant and rave?! What’s a Game Boy Pocket, anyway? The original B&W version?

Never say something is “kiddie” as a negative point. All it does is reinforce your own immaturity trying to overcompensate and go “i’m soooo grown up”.

MKSC (Mario Kart) is awesome on GBA, miles better than F-Zero. It is cute colourful and great, but if you don’t like that you shouldn’t be buying Nintendo really.

Advance Wars, also full of uber-cute weaponry. The strategy is ridiculous, it’s a lot like chess. I was slightly disappointed by the final stage though.

Wario Ware has a great reputation but imo is overrated. Sonic Advance (1&2) is pretty tasty if you like the 2D Sonic titles.

Super Monkey Ball Jnr rocks, Denki Blocks is pretty good, and Minna de Puyo Puyo is the daddy. Mr Driller Ace if you can get it is one of the best. Chu Chu Rocket is a necessary purchase. Super Puzzle Fighter is also awesome.

They all have lots of cute things in them - BUT IT’S A GOOD THING DAMMIT!

A side note, to anyone in europe, import the games from canada, it’s miles cheaper. And if you have a taste for it import from japan (you have to really for Puyo and Mr Driller), because they package them much better (and Sega published titles have an ‘english’ option), and there’s loads of games that simply don’t exist in the west. The joy of a non-regionalised console . . .

Cube one word, 3 games:
Castlevania

I wouldn’t advise getting the first one because it’s unbearably dark even in direct sunlight in Las Vegas, but the second two are much brighter.

Yes, otherwise I wouldn’t have anything to rant and rave about.

BTW: A Game Boy Pocket is smaller than the original Game Boy. Other than that, I don’t think there were any advancements. (I never owned an original Game Boy.)

Castlevania… good idea for once, VK. BTW: “Morrowind” isn’t that great, even with a good computer. It’s too hard to be a thief.

Sorry about “kiddie,” Kid Tripod. %| I think it looks stupid. Why would Donkey Kong, Mario & all their enemies race instead of fight?

BTW: “Tasty?” The cartridges are edible? Maybe with chocolate or cheese or Coca-Cola or something, but really… I’m just playing, I know you meant “good.”

Not so Cube, go behind someone and hold down Ctrl with some object all night to sneak behind them. Next morning you will have gained tons of levels. I played it for about 4 hours and now I can kill anything in thee game. My last character could kill anything in one hit and have over 4 million gold. It’s a very easy game to play if you learn the tricks.

Hmm, well I usually don’t like getting advice for games (it ruins the feel of playing it), but whatever.

Next: How do you kill someone? I’ve tried plenty of times, and they always seem to be able to beat me. I could fight some random guy on the street and he’d kill me. In fact, I can’t kill those stupid rats in Caius’ town.

Well you see Cube, in RPGs you level up your people. So they’re not some scrawny wuss.

To make an Elysiun’s analogy, tender chorus boy leveled up and is now smartass chorus boy.

See, it’s easy to understand.

Martin

Today I punched a shopkeeper’s assistant in the first town. She killed me. I don’t think that’s normal. Apparantly I can only kill mudcrabs and slug-like things.

Besides, “Morrowind” isn’t MMO. I don’t know how people so wussy-looking can be so frigging tough!

Well, to stand your own in a one on one fight you need these:

  1. Good Armor (I got the glass armor early on in the game, it has a rating of 52 of something)
  2. Good Weapons (I had umbras sword. A two handed longsword that did tremendous damage and I could cast soul trap from it as much as I wanted. You have to beat Umbra to get it. That’s a whole different story.)
  3. Good Stats (You have to specialize in the weapon you’re using, have a decent strength and so on. This is relatively unimportant actually. A level 1 with awesome armor and weapons could dispatch of a level 10 guy with weak armor and weapons easy.)

There ya go. I had beat the monster considered the hardest in the game at level 4. By level 14 I could kill it in one hit. I had millions of gold from stealing and selling stuff. Take a look on GameFaqs.com and look at various guides for it.

Theeth, if I can get my Elysiun experience points up enough I’ll be a baddass chorus boy. That’s not really fair though, since I’m not still in chorus this year, I’ll change my profession to Smartass Pianist Boy.

Today I played it again without having taken your advice. I looked at my stats and got some stuff that suited me, such as a long sword and some armor. It worked well–I finally managed to beat a rat, some slaughterfish, mudcrabs and those worm things… kamra somethings?

Now, if I can get to a city, I might actually be able to try some new stuff. If only I could kill things more easily… there doesn’t happen to be a difficulty option by any chance, is there?
