I’m almost certain I want to buy a Game Boy Advance SP. (No, SP doesn’t stand for “syrupy potion.”) However, I’m a little concerned with a few issues. For one, I want to play the upcoming “Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hand,” which almost requires you to play outside. Cool, except I rarely ever go outside. The only time I do is at school, where they “confiscate” “distractions” and force your parents to get it at their bookstore. (More on this issue may come in a later post.)
Second, many people seem to have that old premonition that it’s a toy (similar to what everyone thought about Atari systems, cell phones, movies with real sound and horseless carriages). What grounds do I base this on, aside from the fact that my school would probably “confiscate” your action figures if you took them? The games: Plenty of Mary-Kate & Ashley games, lots of “PDA-for-kids” games (there’s even one based on that damned Lizzie McGuire show coming soon), and very few truly cool games. Hous… er, Ariz… uh, elYsiun, we have a problem.
Third, I’m more than willing to sell my Game Boy Pocket & Game Boy Color to make up for the costs. However, I know of very few places that would buy them, and eBay won’t work—I’d be surprised if, after selling off my Game Boy Pocket, I could afford an ice cream at McDonald’s with how low they were selling ($7.00! The world’s nuts! It used to be high-tech). The GBC also wasn’t selling for much (somewhere around maybe $35.00 US), and the few games I own are either too good or too awful to sell.
And worst of all, no matter what games I buy, the one game everyone should play isn’t on it despite how notably suitable it would be: NetHack. I love this game. I always die, but I keep trying. Now, what does this say? “Replayability” and “addiction” come to mind. And what’s perfectly suited for that? Not a bulky PC, nor even a CD with the game and WinZip on it. No, the GBA could very well do the game, and since it’s a rather small game (in file size—you wouldn’t believe how big the game actually seems) at 4.38 megs unzipped and in a file folder for Windows, they could pack in so much stuff (like open source, customizable interface like tiles and ASCII graphics, and so much more extra silly stuff in the “hallu” stage your character sometimes enters your head explodes just thinking about it), I say that it’s a perfect fit. “NetHack” can beat other dungeon hacks, like “Rogue” and “Diablo,” any day 24/7. Yet not even those games are ported! Give me “NetHack” or give me death! (Or “Diablo.” But I prefer “NetHack.”)
