My projection painting experiments

Just a little practice experiment using blender and krita. Modeled and rendered in blender, textured in Krita using camera mapping.

I love how you can combine the power of 3d, and the artistic freedom of 2d painting. This allows you to achieve a beautiful painterly style, while retaining the ability to animate or use the model in a game engine. I hope to use this technique on lots of future projects, especially game assets.

If you are interested in this workflow, I followed this tutorial by lightning boy studio.

I followed the tutorial for the most part, but used my own style for the texture, and I think it turned out very well!

Here is another video on the topic that I found useful.

Comments and suggestions are always appreciated!

I attempted to create a cylinder using similar techniques. It proved to be a lot more challenging!

I didn’t finish the other side, but I plan to do so soon.

I don’t think it turned out as good as the cube, but the point is to develop a reusable workflow for these kinds of projects. Let me know what you think!

I think you’ve got the technique down for sure. Looking forward to what you’re going to create with it!

The cube, the curved edges are cool!
The cylinder, the solidness is very well presented
Nice technique!

Thanks, @kar1s0n and @Minamookevlar!

I nearly forgot about these! I should do some more at some point with more complex shapes, like a cog or a sword.

This is very interesting. Would love to see some tutorial about whole process. How you prepare models and paint them in Krita. It could be interesting for lot of people if you do it

This is the tutorial I followed:

Here’s a summary of my workflow:

  • Setup simple scene with a camera.
  • Uv unwrap the model into two separate UVmaps: one with a regular unwrap, and one projected from the camera view.
  • Render the scene.
  • Create a simple lighting setup and render it as a separate image.
  • Paint over your render in Krita.
  • Import the lighting render as a layer and stylize it.
  • Save the image and import it back into blender. Map it back onto the model, using the camera projected UV map.
  • Repeat for all needed angles
  • Bake everything in cycles
