100% blender. the material for the ring part is kinda based on this tutorial,http://www.blendermasters.com/cms/en/modelling/building-a-ring-3.html, with some modifications.
Hi, it’s quite a simplistic scene you’ve made there. It’s got a bit of a cartoony feel to it which is cool,but a few little tweaks to some of your settings will improve it. At the moment the gold band doesn’t really look like metal because of the way it is reflecting and the jewel likewise because of the reflection and lack of transparency.
If you go to the materials panel and hit the mirror transparency tab you’ll see buttons for enabling ray traced mirror reflection and transparency. With gold, for a quick example if you turn on ray mirror and put the mirror slider up to say 0.5 and the fresnel to 1 and in your shaders tab change from cook torr to phong and move the spec and hard values way up. That’s a pretty good start for a gold metal.
Googling blender jewel materials, raytracing etc will normally always give you a good place to start from. One last point if you make something reflective it’s always better to have something else in the scene to reflect:) Good Luck with your future blending!
Adding to what seanser said, the lighting could be helped adjusting some of the spotlight’s parameters.
- Bring SpotBI up to at least .7
- Raise the spotSi to encompass all of your scene.
- Since this is a still, try changing to raytraced shadows. Then, change the soft size to about 4, and the samples to 5 or 6. This should help out the realism of the lighting some.
Also, the modeling of the ring could be helped. Nothing to complex, just something to connect the jewel to the band. Try just making a simple small cylinder with the gold material to connect the two.

Cool ring. I’ll admit it inspired me to try a similar project myself. One suggestion I would add to those already posted is to lower the top row of vertices around the table (the top facet of the gem) so that they are roughly half as far from the belt (the widest part) as the bottom is, or less.

First, it is a bit hard to tell, but the shadow looks like it is a bit off, not as angled as the shadow for the ring. Also, try extruding the end of the screwdriver a bit, this should give you the flat surface of a screwdriver - there is usually a flat length before the head tapers off into the neck diameter.
alright, i think i’ve done all i can, so i’m gonna stop updating this thing. thanks to everyone who commented and helped me out. here’s one last pic. if you guys have any other idea just take the blend file and do whatever you want to it.

I think i can fix this up
but its a nice simple scene
i like simplicity but once i learned all these cool features of blender
simp;icity was lost forever
learn everything you can about blender and keep it simple:eek::eek::eek:

Ok i did a few things
I turned on ambient occlusion
i made the screw driver handle handle and the actual metal two different parts with a little trick i use that every on prolly already knows how to do:shift d to duplicate…then selected the handle of the screwdriver…select swap…delete…then delete the screw on the original model.
I took of the subsurfmodifier of the metal part so its more…well:confused:metallish
and i uv mapped the emerald part with my own Raw Emerald Texture made in Genetica:yes:
Thats all I did
