My steam punk thread

Now that I’m free from building builds for graphicall  I had more time to
look around on the forum and I saw that there’s
a steam punk mythological contest on cg society.
Living in Norway I always hear about Thor this or that, every day practically,
so I decided to try and make a steampunk Ragnarök picture.
This is a sketch i made tonight in gimp, I’m going to try and model everything this week,
I want to make it so the serpent (I thought Ragnarök was a dragon)
is falling from a lightning strike to the head with smoke trailing,
and looking on wikipidia I guess thor should be practically dead.
So as the night goes on this painting will look different and I’ll start modeling.

I’m a great enthusiast of Norsk Mythology so it’s pretty obvious i am looking forward to your work!

The GIMP image is already great for a start!

Good luck!

thanks Khel, I’ve liked thor since I was 12 with the comics.
I decided that even though Ragnarök is supposed to have a snake I’m going to make it dragon-ish ,
because that would be funner to model with the gears and all.
A snake might be cool though, if when it renders it looks huge in the background like a coiled mountain,
getting struck by crazy lightning. Like those sand creatures in DUNE?
Even then I’m not too into modeling a mechanical snake, although it would probably be pretty easy
after the head and first segment were modeled . Just shift D the rest of the segments.
Edit: Still working on it! There’s 30 pages of entries already, I should really work on something else.
I merged all the layers into an 800 kilobyte gif animation,
I’m probably going to finish the painting part of it a little more if I get tired of modeling.
I bounce around a lot between things

I started to model , but I’m not sure if I want to join this. I was a little bored yesterday when I started it.
I guess I still have a month to change my mind, but tonight all I want to do is watch my DVR Star Trek Enterprise
and LOST.

I just made a quick basic render in internal to help motivate myself,
I’m probaly going to use kerkythea or yafaray though.
I think I have the rough shapes I want, so now I’m going to beef them up, and then add more layers.
Plus it’s a little too jovial looking, like a ‘Fraggle Rock’ character.
The clockwork gears in the brain are going to be fun!
I made another little gif animation, I’m not sure if I want to work on this anymore!
I like a lot of the art in the cg society forum, but reading their forum posts
make me a little nausious for some reason. I think it’s because every other artist
there works for lucasfilm, dreamworks etc. and then at the same time they’re
joining competitions on forums when they already have a job.
It makes me wonder how good those jobs are

I worked on the painting a little more, as I was getting sick of modeling
the dragons gears/springs and all, I still have a lot of work to do on the painting.
I think I want to have the dragon be impossibly huge, like the sandworms
in DUNE, and also to have him getting struck in the head with lightning.
So I might wind up making a village under it or a mountain range.
I guess in the Ragnarock legend Thor could only
take three steps before he was dead after the battle.
I definately want to have the feeling that the dragon is crumbling in the background.

Here’s a quick update, I’m probably only going to spend a couple more days on this,
but I might animate a measly 10 second animation. if I complete the entire dragon,
and am not sick of it all. I still have to do a bit on the armour for Thor,
this way it won’t look like the choclate coins pasted to his chest.
For a while yesterday the helmet made him look like a mexican wrestler,
because it was silver and gold, but I think it’s looking better.
Silver and gold helmets are no good!
The rig is a quick rig, just so he’s not in ‘default pose’.

Never heard of steampunk Dragons before, good idea.

But then you fall into the Dragon as evil stereotype and make it not all friendly for a Dragon to look that. The modeling, lighting, and materials look really good though.

Thanks CD,
Yes, you’re right, dragons are evil!
I have to also make the dragon look more steampunkish maybe.
I’m not too sure if I’m interested in this steampunk though, upon a weeks reflection.
I don’t think I want to add ‘steam/piston/faucet/woodenbarrels’ type stuff to the dragon.

woa! that’s amazing!

Thanks Jeepster! I like your tiger thread also.

Yes, you’re right, dragons are evil!

And most people think the same unfortunately, I don’t think Dragons are evil as well as think that they’re not portrayed as good majestic creatures enough. But then you may end up calling me biased just because I am a Dragon (I have a Dragon soul)

CD: first you say:

but then you say:

The Dragons bare their teeth and tongues of fury, beckoning for you to come foward so you can be licked and chewed furiously.

Surely you can see a contradiction?

Nice work Andy. Keep it up!

Thanks freen and CD, I’m trying to animate it a little,
even before I finish the modeling, to motivate myself and figure stuff out.
I guess there’s only ten more days or so before that challenge is over, so i don’t know.
I don’t think I’ll finish this for the steampunk, but I can keep on working on it anyway,
and really try and detail thors armour.
I think if I could animate the gears and all on the dragon I could
stretch a 30 second animation out of it.
I want the dragon to be in the death twitches, but I think it could be a little subtler than this.
It looks like ‘thunderbird’ muppets right now though.
This is only 1.4 megs for the animation, but I’m not sure how
the forums deals with bandwidth, so I’ll delete them if it’s out of hand.
Yesterday the forum went down, and I think there’s probably 5 megs of stuff on this page.
