I usually dont do this, but im very happy with the way this ended up. I had never made a planet before (which is why its all flat and sucky) but hey, gotta start somewhere.
Its a model of the Von Braun, from the game System Shock 2. if youve never played the game, i strongly suggest finding it for $10 in a bargain bin, its one of the greatest games ever made. Incredibly immersive, scary as hell, and fun. Made by the same people that did Thief, so you know it rocks.
hoses, panels, etc. like on the Millenium Falcon.
(Though I understand you probably want to stay true to the original design of the ship from System Shock2).
Looks very good except one thing: If there is a place where there is no global illumination, it is space. The part that does not point to the sun should be pitch black, and there should be sharp shadows.
The lighting would be perfect in any other surrounding though…
Nice work, Enos! Lighting does look a bit non-spaceish, though if Nico hadn’t pointed it out I would probably not notice. And if you go for the dark unlit areas and sharp shadows, you will need to add window lights etc, as they usually do to show the shape of a spaceship. (that would look good)
And it is a great game - I couldn’t finish it though, unfortunatelly, as it was too scary for casual “play to relax” in the evening, so I just couldn’t find time for it I nearly finished the first one though!
I see you have continued work on your ship. I am going to add more nurnies to mine too. I wish we had a week long contest. That would allow ample time for nurnization etc… Really nice job man.
The sections “Adding Mesh Detail” (for “nurnies” which I’ve often heard called “greebling”) and “Lighting Tech Based Ships” should be quite interesting.
This page is one of the absolute best tutorials on how to make a space environment look good that’s out there. Yes, it’s oriented towards Lightwave, but just about all the tools parallel something in Blender quite nicely.
Nice ship, by the way… is that game available for X-Box? :-?
