Happy painting!

Great news, just downloaded it. My favorite painting application.

More brushes are available there :

Very cool… now, how do I install/build from source? I’m on ubuntu 10.04 and synaptic shows 0.9.
And that brush pack is pretty nice too.

Hey freakydude, its pretty easy, its all in the readme. basically from terminal just cd into the mypaint-0.9.1 directory and copy paste from the readme

*install the needed libs first, again right from the readme.

I would love it if this program allowed you to (optionally) specify a strict canvas size. It’s difficult to do realtime previews of UV textures in 3D while you’re painting when you have to be very careful not to paint outside the image edge. A few accidental pixels painted, export to png, refresh image in Blender, and then realize you have to open the file in Gimp, crop to the original border, export again, refresh Blender…

Otherwise it’s by far the best tool for freehand drawing/painting in Linux.

mikshaw, I’ve poked their devs about this, and I’m not the only one.- I’m pretty sure they will have a canvas size in the 1.0 version. Workflow-wise, I’d say it’s the best painting tool I’ve used on any platform, but again, it needs to mature a bit (layer modes, image/texture brushes). It’s so freakin’ fast though I always go back to it.

My 2 only annoyances (layers not being able to be rotated/mirrored/etc individually and brush visual cursor not corresponding to the actual size of the brush) are known problem apparently, so sooner or later they should get solved.

But other than that, i use it on Windows and i really like it, reminds me a lot of the Sculptris philosophy : so intuitive and user friendly that you have freedom of creativity without having to learn/fight an interface.

I wish more applications had such unobstructive concept and intuitivity regarding their UI and workflow.

Odd side-note…I might not have known about MyPaint if I hadn’t recently developed problems with my tablet. I had been doing all my drawing in Gimp, but when i upgraded to Debian Wheezy from Lenny I ran into problems with my wacom tablet in Gimp. I’ve heard it’s related to the latest version of Gtk, but i’m not sure. Anyway, I went looking for other programs, and found the tablet works great with MyPaint.

I have read several reports about tablet users having lots of problems with GIMP, a solution that seemed to work for them is to actually launch GIMP by clicking with your tablet, and not with the mouse, to get it correctly captured.

I vaguely remember mention of a tablet problem needing to be fixed for the next version, if it comes one day of course.

Off topic, butmy Medion tablet works fine in Gimp- until I click “save as” then it stops working, I have to save with the mouse instead. Then the tablet works again. I wonder if I should report this…

For those like me using Window, a nice fellow is providing a window build of the latest git version of MyPaint so we can toy with the new features :

Works nicely so far for me and my mouse
