Mystic-MMORPG

Mystic: A MMORPG

Okay, I’ve had the idea in my head for a while that I want to make a 3D mmorpg game…

I know big put-down people that I probably won’t finish it…:stuck_out_tongue:

BUT:

I think that if I got a HUGE group of people on Blenderartists to contribute in any way, large or small, then as a team effort we can make a playable mmorpg.

NOW, Here’s My idea:

Mythic Backstory:

Long ago there was a man named Ferl. He lived under a waterfall, every day going out into the jungle, hunting his food, and living life.
Until one day when he found something imbedded in the ground. It was a wooden door, and after hours prying, he got it open.
He descended the dusty steps into what must have been a large room, because when he moved it echoed over a long distance. He decided it was best not to go in farther without proper lighting.
So, he lit a torch and walked…
After about 5 minutes he hit a wall. He walked alongside the wall until he came to a strange door, made of wood, but the wood was perfect and not rotten. It opened too easily for him to not be suspicious; almost like it had been waiting. When he looked in, the room was sunlit. After his eyes adjusted, he saw a hole in the ceiling, above which was the open sky.
He saw a river of golden water with a bridge going over it. A sign next to the bridge said:
“Once you cross this bridge, there is no return”
Curious, he examined the bridge, the sign, and the water, as any man would do, but, wary as he was, never crossed the bridge. He went back to his cave under the waterfall and found asked one of his friends there to come with him.
When they got back to the same spot, his friend, Len, instantly began to cross.
Ferl watched.
As Len was crossing, he was raised above the ground about an inch, but, unaware, continued to walk. When he got to the other side of the bridge, he stopped.
After about 3 seconds, he disappeared.
Ferl never saw him again.
Len regained consciousness in a world very unlike his own. He was in the middle of a desert, the sand was green. Or was it sand??
You are a historian, and you decide that this specific Myth must be true. So you take a plane to South America, and that’s where your quest begins.

This is my idea. It will start out as a regular video game, maybe a good 5 hours of gameplay before you are taken to the MMORPG.

It will all still be free however.

I think this is unique and could work. Give me your ideas.

Btw, the Myth?

It IS real in this mmorpg. So the Online part of it starts when you find your destination and cross the bridge.
I just decided that if I can add more to it, why not?

I think that the new world you are transported to will be awesome
It will be a strange world we can make it all up! Whatever we want we ARE the creators, muahahahzz

Okay, one of the most important things is weeds, grass, plant life. I have studied for a while now how this works. Almost every un-industrialized area in our world is covered with weeds, tall grass, flowers… And trees of course

So the question is, how do you do this without too much… uh… we’ll say lag lolz.
I believe I found the answer one day while playing “Savage 2” mmorpg (a very different style than any other game I have ever seen, but one of my favorites.

There is a foliage draw distace, so wherever you are in the game, there are weeds right there around you, the farther on you go, the stuff behind you disappears, and the stuff in front of you appears… Of course, almost all MMORPG’s use this technique, because of large worlds, and stuff like that. But I think that in this game it worked really well, it blew my mind really, it is almost a realistic game, except that there are weird creatures and stuff xD

Do you know network programming???

Anyways, making online games is not hard with static characters: like when, in pumpkin run, there are a set number of characters that do what they do and necer change their look or play animations.

Dynamic… not so much, like where people log in and log out and there is not a set number of clients and they walk and they change their outfits. You’d also need to find a dedicated server.

Do this and I might help.

@YoungApprentice: Well, I basically don’t know a whole ton about MMORPG’s but this is a learning experience for all and for those that know more about it than me I shall take their advice.
Network Programming, not so much however, I do know a bit of C++ and am actively learning it . I hope this can help our cause.

Also, with the dynamic and static characters I obviously want both because any good game needs both…

Server: If we can honestly do this, then at first I can host it until we get too many people, when if we are honestly still a success I will buy a super-uber computer, yes, and host my own server.
I’m saving already!

The difficultly I see you having is unifying people under a common goal. Even if everyone just contributes a little bit it won’t work because there’s still the logistics of getting everything working together.

A lot of mmo/other game plans appear on these forums with little substance or planning to them. Saying ‘it’ll be a learning experience for us’ doesn’t help much. People still don’t know what they’re getting themselves into, and you haven’t shown them any progress to inspire or motivate them. You need to lead by example if you want to gain good, competent people.

Get something to show and then people will listen, at the moment you have nothing - and yet you’re already in the clouds thinking about what it will/could become far in the future. MMOs take a long time to make, successful MMOs even longer. Why exactly do you want to make an MMO? What will be better than any of the other MMOs out there (and there are a lot)? What areas do you know/are skilled in?

heh that’s one of the things though, sometimes you need to just let go and look at the future, sometimes it’s good to just go for it, without too much contemplation.

Now, I know that people think this can’t get anywhere(like you), but like I said I just want to give it a shot.

Now as for progress, that’s exactly my point I want to start it right here with EVERYone’s input.

As for the problem with the unification of everyone, well we will have permanent team members and contributors. It’s all there, read again if you must.

Also I started a Forum for the development of this game if anyone is interested

So that’s my idea for now! Thanks

P.S. - Oh the game is called Mythic !

If you guys actualy pull this off NO MEDIEVAL mmorpg. come up with something more origanal but sounds like a fantastic Idea. If you guys pull this off. most of the people here dont like the Idea because they see threads like this fail and almost not even reach the second page. Im not going to descourge you and say “this is hard and blah blah blah” but what I am saying is you better get some one who has actualy had some experience with making somethig this big and that is going to be hard to find because most of the people are already caught up in other projects and such and I think aquadicpinguin had a very good point show us that you can complete some thing before you start throughing Ideas up there … any way just ranting good luck on the project and all

-Josh-

lolz yahh thx for comments, I just updated I have a story and idea thanks!

Okayy… SO I am thinking more FPS for the first part of the game at least I have created several guns and stuff already!! Donate things that could be useful plz!

I like the idea but I have a couple of suggestions.

I was thinking for the game it would be cool if you found the door and bridge and you crossed it and THEN the mmorpg began.

I think fps is a bad idea. I think you need to go medieval/fantastical with wierd weapons but nothing modern like guns. it might work for the start of the game but for the mmorpg part it wouldn’t work.

I also think that it shouldn’t be a desert put a forest with wierd fantastical plants.

Those are just my ideas for this game. I might help…

hehe that sounds awesome.
First: Thatwas what I was planning on. The first part is a modern FPS type thing then when you cross the bridge the mmorpg begins.
You will appear with no weapons oor armour, just the starting clothes that you had in the beginning.

Now, you see where it says… “Or was it even sand?” ?

That’s just his first impression, however, Len travelled awhile and came to the edge of a tropical jungle

But… not anything like a normal jungle

EDIT: and thankx for suggestions

Haha. This is funny.

You should do the logic and programming first, that way if you fail you haven’t wasted all the time making, texturing and animating everything. And drop the first M

Write a decent game documentation, find artists with actual talent, and I will probably have enough interest to develop and realize this noble idea of yours.

No joke, if you get a decent game documentation that will spark my interest and you have good artists, I can get a framework running in a decent amount of time. Once the initial framework is finished, you’ll get a lot of interested contributors and additional content can be added. The project will be realized and be yet another “Planeshift”.

I am not being sarcastic or making jokes. Do what I said and this project will be realized.

if you want pople to take you seriously and join your team, then you should constantly upload of concepts, models and screenshots. because if your just waiting for people to join and then you are going to start working; this means you don’t know what your doing and want people to make it for you.

if you don’t have much programming experience and never made a majour game, then it will take you 5 days maximum for this thread to become abbandoned.

I think you should have a reality check mate this is unrealistic. especially if you don’t even have networking experience and haven’t even started modelling. You say you want it to be a fps at the start, well you also need to learn game design too because if you want an mmorpg but at the start a mmofps, that doesn’t make sence.

Its okay though. many people tried to make an mmorpg and don’t succeed; including me  but you should try make smaller scaled games an d work your way up.

RedHand: I am sorry you are so rude.

Andrew101: True but I can get better at modeling and stuff, nothing is ever a waste of time in Blender

sparkart: What exactly do you mean by game documentation?

Retro world: I have made three working games already and have spent nearly three years in the game engine. Realistic or not, I WILL give it a try.

Also, I will post screens soon, I am in the process of modeling a fantastical creature. I have mostly been drawing concept art though so far… Nothing much to show.

Thanks for comments!.
Micah

Andrew101: True but I can get better at modeling and stuff, nothing is ever a waste of time in Blender

Nope, you getting it wrong. If the aim of this project is to learn or gain modeling/texturing and animation experience, then it’s pointless to engage yourself and the community at a very huge task.
The idea might even be revolutionary, however, being an online game, you should get the ‘skeleton’ (the network setup) working, in a way animations are possible. Then artists will help you get the models and flesh up your project.
Good luck, and pay attention to what some artist say, in the case of Andrew, he actually got an online game running!

Yes. You should definitely do the coding. Even crappy textures, but a seamless game, can still be good…

You see, I’ve done many projects, and although the models and stuff are the most fun part, eventually you have to get to the programming. And Andrew 101 is right.

Why don’t you should for something a little more plausible?

Check this out. Old jim is doing a WASG project as we speak! And it’s going somwhere. Because he knows how to program!

Also… 5 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY???
That’s a lot of work.

You better have a lot of puzzles, man.

Sorry about alll the Caps…

BTW LISTEN TO SPARKART!!!

If you get some real substance and something to show that you know what you are doing, I PROMISE you I will join. But you need to work for this, man!

I personly don’t get the fps thing. I think it should be one style of game play the whole way.

I am interested in this project but I am not sure if it is going anywhere. I completely agree with sparkart and retroworld. I don’t want to join a game without seeing some stuff first.

torakunsama
Okay, I could stand to take some advice and I see that you are right. I should probably get some sort of server set up, however, I wasn’t planning on even starting the MMORPG part of it until later…

YoungApprentice
I appreciate you wanting to join if I can get some progress done. Like I said though, the MMORPG part wasn’t going to come until later, however, I think it would be beneficial to get it set up first.

Pirate___man
I am getting some stuff done. Umm… I just can’t think of what sort of enemy we should have, i was thinking that the government knows about it and they set up a base in South America and so you are trying to get past the protection to get to the bridge, but I think that might work without any killing enemy system, maybe it should be how you have to sneak past and it is really difficult to get through their security… Like a National Treasure or something. So we may not need the FPS system I agree…
And as for getting stuff done, I assure you I will  Just keep following, and I would appreciate any critics/suggestions, this will work trust me.
