I’ve been working on this for about 18 months. I posted earlier shots in the WIP forum and have mainly tweaked the textures a lot. It’s my first 3D project and has gone through many revisions/screw ups/restarts etc…
Thankyou to everyone here who has helped in this often baffling and fiddly process. This is ‘probably’ finished. Fully posable and (I think) 150,000 vertices. Does anyone have any suggestions for rendering? Blender seems rather limited as regards anti aliasing etc…
Wow! I feel like this should be in some History Channel computer simulation of a battle! Very nice!
WOWSIE! If this is your first CG project, I wonder what the fifth would look like!
Great work, gallery stuff here!
Thanks very much for the kind comments. How do I put a thumbnail of this in the header on main forum page btw?
Here’s a reworking with a different character. Again - how do I get a thumnail on the thread in forum?
Very cool, looks good! (and before Modron gets here) turn on Dither in the render tab (it will kill the background banding).
Thanks! but I can’t find the dither tab.
In Blender 2.5x its the located on the Render Tab in the “Post Processing” panel. Dither is a slider 0.000 -> 2.000.
The thumbnail only appears if you have an attachment, rather than embedded images in your first post.
Very impressive model (if only my models looked like that…)
Thanks but I’ve still got 249.2. Can’t find ‘post processing tab there’ unless I’m missing it. I’m worried to update to latest version as I fear too much relearning of processes. Is this the case? Also, does it overwrite completely my current version in case I’d prefer to go back to it? Thanks everyone for your help!
On 2.49b it’s still on the Render Tab -> Output Panel (just below the output directories).
Ah yes I see it. What do I set it at?
I just set it to 1 or 2 (because I don’t really know any better), though I’m sure the best answer though is the smallest value possible until the bands are no longer visible.
Excelent work. Congratulations.
I saw this WIP. Excellent work.
Man, this is a goddamn amazing first complete work! I bow to your patience and preservation
Brilliant character. The details on the clothes are great. As far as getting a nicer render, just a studio setup within blender with a nice backdrop (just a sloping white plane like in a photographers studio) to provide a floor and some shadows would go a long way. I’ve attached a blend with a basic setup if you want to take a look. I used it for this.

Thanks Ben. I’m away for the weekend at present but I’ll take a look at that when I get home. Thanks for the kind comments. As I said, this took a long time and went through many. many revisions. As of now, I have the basic figure and I can build on it from here.
Thanks Ben…that’s enlightening.
I want to start to build an environment for these guys - ground and buildings. My experimental attempts so far have slowed rendering to a crawl. Does one use a flat plane for ground or a long box? Also I’ve read that the sky should be acheived by using a large dome. Is this correct? Another thing I’ve been wondering is - does the scale of the figure/landscape etc…matter? ie…if I select everything and shrink it using scale to as small as possible in the frame, does it make it easier to render or is it purely down to poly count?
Thanks,
Comp
