An ICON, for those or might not know is an .ICO file used to add an illustration before a web address. A few days ago the Blender Artists one suddenly appeared on my favorites. I wrote Bart at Blender Nation telling him how good it looked, and saying Blender Nation should have one too. He replied crypticly, “be my guest - give it a try! :)”
Well I made a dummy page with this simple design suggestion…
…but I’m sure some others can make finer suggestions! Please do…
How about a waving flag with Blender’s logo (or, to be simpler, the outline)?

Umm…I would stray away from the blender logo.
The whole point is that it defines blender, and blender alone.
An Icon does not need to be blender related.
And for gods sakes no monkey heads.
Care to try make a design Bellboy? The thing to take into account is the images get reduced to really small sizes - on average around 16 X 16 pixels, so keeping an image crisp is a challenge. Blender Artists succeeded with numerous colours but that’s maybe cause I got a cool monitor 
My idea with the blue and the Blender shape was Nation is mostly in Blueish tints. Maybe they’d prefer a flashy flag though 
Good point Enriqolonius, but Nation and the organisation almost live in eachothers pockets - by that I mean the ‘Headline News’ is always run on Blender.org.
So maybe something completely different like…

Wow! That was fast! I like it + it loads quick 'n easy too! [Just realised my .ico was 280 kb from a trailversion ???] Inkscape can save .ico’s ? Didn’t know that.
Hope Bart will come look here too 
EDIT: Shading looks even better!..just saw they were .png’s but hey - if that’s okay for the idea

That’s a png file, exported it in the actual size so it’s faster (and more accurate)

He probably converted it to .ico later- I’m pretty sure you can just change the file extension of most image formats to make it a .ico. If only it was like that with everything :rolleyes:

No html code needed , just name the icon “favicon.ico” and that’s all .

Here’s two more
I prefer the cube one over the letters (in fact it was the cube which gave me the idea for the letters one in the first place)
The letters works down to as low as 16x16, though it isn’t as clear. The cube one works great, though.
I thought red would go with the Blendernation blue. Just an experiment…

Got a reaction from Bart regarding the first contribution I made:
“yes, sorry for not replying sooner - I’ve been very busy this week. The icon is nice, but I don’t think you can just change the color of the Blender icon - Ton would probably object to that. I’d say we’ll first need a proper logo for BlenderNation before we design something like this. At this moment that is quite low on my priority list though…”
Well unless someone comes up with a killer Icon that has a life as a logo too, I don’t think we’re going to be making much impact here 
Like the update rpgsimmaster! Hopefully some creativity can shake Bart out of his apathy too! Can’t remember how long it took this forum to ditch it’s default “V-Bulletin look”. While I might agree that content is more important than form - can it harm anyone to try improve the look of Blender Nation? …and it’s not like we’re charging by the hour!
I don’t know. I really like the blenderartists icon and I can see at a glance which window is which.
Makes me think I should put that new graphic I’ve drawn up on my page too.
My thought exactly. A FavIcon generally is a mini version of the logo. Since there is no real logo for BN…
Although I must admit… the blue flag looks not bad. Although I might but the BN on it instead.

Yup, i agree with you and Bart. Maybe i could try and make a logo, based on the flag concept but right now i’m focused on other matters. It’s a pity we can’t use Blender’s logo, but it is understandable (although it would be cooler with the logo instead of the letters BN).
rpgsimmaster: That cube looks cool. Although i usually don’t like letters in logos, i like your idea of using them to form a cube. The only problem for me is the two N’s.
Anyway, it’s not our decision, but this is a fun idea and maybe someone will come up with a killer logo. Keep posting 'em logos! :yes:
