Need a little help with weight painting and symmetry

Hello, I’m working on my first full rig, teaching myself how this stuff works, having a little trouble understanding how symmetry works in weight painting though. Perhaps someone can point me to what I’m missing. I’m working on a dragon model. Trying to paint to one foot and have it mirrored on the other foot. I have mirror vertex groups checked, turned on Topology Mirror as well, however when I check the paint changes on the other foot, it didn’t transfer to the other side.

I got the symmetry to work, it was simply I just didn’t have the X vector selected, because I thought it already was when I selected mirror vertex groups. Well that was easy.
