One other option would be to separate the fingers into their own objects - allowing for enough overlap with the hand to merge them back in. You could just separate two of the fingers, so you have enough of a gap between the remaining ones. Do all the big changes and re-meshes like that. Once it’s all looking right, boolean them all together, and smooth over the joins.
