I’m looking to start learning how to design and program my first mmorpg for android.
I think the issue is i just have to many options; I need help Narrowing things down.
I think ultimately im torn between using Blender and Unity OR Blender and Jmonkey.
it seems like unity is more modern but it comes with a price tag where as Jmonkey is free.
Im looking to create a MMO that would run on newer phones or tablets with atleast 2.2-4.0 android.
since unity doesnt seem to support java for coding i would have to learn Another language in order to use unity instead of jmonkey, which is fine , i just kind of want some input, so i can make a educated decision. is it really worth spending 1400 for unity and is unity really as good as all the hype says?
I agree with the fact that Unity is one of the best game engine which I have seen so far but spending 1400 for it is not a really wise decision if you know that you will not use it often, but if you know that you will be able to use it for your products then it’s a good decision.
anyone else have any advice ? would you tutorials provided by blender and unity be enough for me to learn what i need to develop a mmo with them ?
does unity have any type of server side software?
I would suggest that you make your game using the free version of Unity3D and when you are done, get the 30 day free trial and export it to android. That way you wouldn’t pay anything and use “a more modern engine” ;D
I would suggest to do some project planning. An medium app with some basic functions and server communications easily has a total development cost of 100.000 Euro. Many small game apps have a development cost of 400.000 Euro+. And that’d be on iOS, where development is “easier” as there’s no need to develop for a gazillion devices… So don’t worry about 1400 for unity.
That is unless you calculate your working hours to be free and are happy with 100 sales and a hourly rate of 0.5 Eurocents.
Then again, an MMO for 100 sales… anyways, a MMO? You’re aiming quite high tbh.
However, if you just do it for the sake of doing it… go ahead.
Programming is like using a language in real life. To use it properly and fluent you got to use it as often as possible
