Need for new machine?

Hmm does blender support dual cpu? If not why bother

LOL!

So you are gonna enter the challenge at CGTalk then and try and win one?

That is a great machine though. Out of my price range, but nice.

BgDM

blender will not be faster on multiple cpus

but you can render on one without slowing down (much) the work you are doing on the other.

No, it doesn’t support dual CPU right now. But on my dual Opteron I can render and play Quake at the same time. Very nice.

This should probably go on the coders’ forum, but it’s on topic, so I’ll post it:

I want to look at adding multithreading once I have a bit more comp sci experience (and knowledge of cross platform threading libraries). I have been looking at OpenMP, but it looks like only certain compilers support it, and the site isn’t very clear about what does and doesn’t. Making the interface multithreaded would be kind of nasty, but evaluating NURBS surfaces and subdivision surfaces on multiple processors might speed up redraw with armatures. Possibly we could spawn worker threads to do that depending on the number of processors. The simplest way to do multiprocessing on the renderer would be to split up the picture into pieces – with two processors, the first processor would render the top half and the second would render the bottom half. This would give a substantial speed increase and may be relatively easy to implement. I’ll take a look at it.

i would carefully think of entering… Because you lose all your rights of your pics as soon as u upload them… That means you cant sell them, but cgnetworks can… %|

loose rights? ok. that’s it, I will not enter.

sad, I would have won the competition, easily.

If i enter and win i think that $6,300 is fair prize of my work

Hmm i think u are wrong

Clip "By submitting any entries to the Alienware Challenge, artists are giving full, exclusive rights for Alienware and CGNetworks to use the material for marketing purposes in the context of the Alienware Challenge. Artists retain ownership of the material and are allowed to use it for personal promotional purposes only. i.e. Alienware and CGNetworks may use your entry with credits to the artist, but you still own the material and can use it in your portfolio. You cannot sell the rights to anyone else commercially.

put it this way: they hire you to do a job, an exclusive to alienware(ie a mascot, etc), you could’t sell it cause you’d get in (legal) trouble.
anyhow, wish you good luck if you enter!
