Not new to Blender modeling, almost totally fresh to grease pencil.
I attempt to draw with the grease pencil, starting in this order:
create a grease pencil object
draw mode
doodle with mouse and or pen
Nothing shows! not in draw mode, not in object mode.
Curiously in edit mode I see the vectorized strokes.
In a next attempt I discovered that the strokes are somehow “tied” to frames. Again I’m used to Blender modeling for archviz stills, I don’t use the timeline much at all.
So I see the strokes in edit mode AND only at some frames
My intended use of the grease pencil is to draw layered notes and sketches over my models
But, when I go to frame 0 everything disappear, the GP is drawn from frame 1.
That’s probably an option somewhere that allow to make a different drawing on each frame for animation. But I’m sure it can be disabled.
Did you start with some basic tutorials ? Or giving the blender doc a go ?

Unfortunately I didn’t look at GP for a long time , it’s hard to tell you what to do without a deep look into it
Are you using Blender with factory defaults, or have you made modifications? You mentioned that you typically work in archviz; what units are you working in? Grease Pencil strokes have a radius measured in pixels… which might not correspond well to what you have in a large archviz scene.
Also, while Grease Pencil strokes are tied to a frame, they persist across frames unless you explicitly remove them. So disappearing strokes should only happen if you’ve moved forward or backward in time and then deleted or erased strokes.
To make sure everything is at least working in the normal state, let’s do the following:
File → New → 2D Animation
See if you can draw visible strokes (the 2D Animation preset starts you off in Draw mode in an already-created Grease Pencil object)
Switch to Object mode
Add → Grease Pencil → Monkey
You should have two visible Grease Pencil objects… one with your random strokes and one with 2D Suzanne.
