need help desperately...

i have the book introducing character animation with blender.
the book is so helpful,but in chapter two:working with meshes;doing medeling a human head with extrusion medeling page 32-48(using vertices to trace a photograph with a mirror,am not sure what i did wrong but when i come to the part telling me to go under add modifier and select subsurf,when i do that all i get is all the vertices i traced around the photo graph is just softer.no sharp edges.it doesnt fill the lines(vertices)with sides.its just plane lines.no mesh nothing.what am i doing wrong.i attacht the file if you wanna c it

You have not created any faces yet. It is just edges. Is there a place in the tutorial that has you making faces before this? If not, just keep going and get to the place it tells you to make faces.

You should fill the “sides” all by yourself, subsurf modifier has nothing to do with it. Just select 4 or 3 vertices you want to fill and press “F” on your keyboard. Both 4 or 3 are possible, but 4 is the better solution really.
