i made an explorer guitar in blender. just the basic outline then extented the vertices, and made faces so it was solid. and when i hit smooth it screws up the shading. i made sure there was enough light so it shouldn’t have any dark spots. i tried flipping the plane(faces) directions but that didn’t work. any suggestions?
Are you using “recalculate normals”? Sometimes it doesn’t work properly so it’s best to flip the individual faces. If that doesn’t work, please post a screenshot.

i’ve tried recalculate normals and flipping individual faces.
i attached a picture of it.

Remove any faces inside your mesh
Select all vertices and remove any duplicate vertices (W / Remove doubles)
Select all vertices and recalculate normals
In the Properties (N) / Display settings in edit mode you can turn on display normals, they should ALL be facing outdated. If not then flip those that aren’t

that sorta worked but not completely. still has plane lines in some spots.

Those lines are caused by long and narrow faces. You simply need to make the topology better and try to keep the faces as close to squares as reasonably possible
hmmmm…ok. thanks
