Need Help Importing .OBJ and .3DS files

Hi, I tried to import an .obj and .3ds file in Blender 2.49 and Blender 2.5. I selected (File > Import > wavefront .obj, .3ds etc.) and nothing happened. In Cinema 4D and Maya you just select (File > Import) and the model (obj, lwo, 3ds) is imported. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

When you say nothing happened what do you mean?
Are you unable to select an obj file ?
Does the import options box then not appear ?
Does the object then not show up in the 3d view ?
Check the outliner to see if the object is not actually present. It may be on a different layer or the scale may be so small that it is not look to be present.

Some objects do come in offset from the origin (try Center New followed by ALT-G). Sometimes the importer just fails. Often, I have objects that are scaled so small that I have to scale full screen lengths multiple times before the show up in the view port. Generally, if a new name appears in the outliner window, the importer probably worked even if you can not see the object in the view port.

Also, on imported object make sure you put them in edit mode and remove doubles under the vertex menu,. Then press SHIFT-J to remove as many triangles as possible.

Well, seems like almost everything has already been covered.

Just that many times I’ve found that, for architectural objects import, setting 'clamp…" to 0 (effectively unchecking it) is better. Otherwise, as Atom mentioned, it can get really tiny. As you can find out by selecting the object and pressing N to bring up the Object Properties box.

Also, did you try pressing HOME to “zoom extents”?

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Richard, Atom and Makr.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. If I import a very simple (low poly) object it imports fine, although the mesh is importing upside down, which isn’t good. But If I try to import a more complex object like a car or plane for example the object just doesn’t import. I looked in the "outliner’ and it is not there.

Can Blender import more complex .obj or .3ds objects?

imo, 3ds import is probably the worst option - but that’s just my opinion. While I did have problems importing with .obj many times - I now prefer .dae - there was nothing as serious as not being able to see the object.

Can you post a sample problematic file here?

Thanks Makr, I would post the file but I bought it. It was a jet in .obj format. BTW never heard of .dae format. What software application uses that?

I will try with other .obj models too. I just tried to import a “Blackhawk Helicopter” into 2.49 and it imported fine but without the textures. I then tried to import the same helicopter into 2.5 alpha 0 and it did not import. but 2.5 did import a simple mesh. Have you tried importing into 2.5?

What do I need to do to get my .obj model to import with textues?

Question - Why does my whole “GUI Layout” change in Blender 2.5 if I import a file that was saved in Blender 2.49? I want my Blender 2.5 GUI to stay as the default, but the panels change to look like 2.49 when I import a 2.49 file?

Thanks

In the file open window untick ‘Load UI’

Thanks Richard, I’m glad there’s that option.

.dae is the Collada format - a lot of modelers, including sketchup, 3dsMax (I think) use it nowadays.

Normally it does import with the textures, afaik. If not, the first thing to try would be to copy all the textures to the same directory as the .obj file.

A lot of sites give free models in .obj format; maybe you could post ( a link to) one of those with which you have problems. Also, perhaps you could try Blender 2.49.

Good luck.
