Need help making a lightsabre-ish effect.

I was looking around for something like this but wasn’t very successful, I’ve tried a cylinder and extruding it a couple times to have vertices close to each other and then using a halo material, but it’s not very good. So I was wondering if anyone knew a better way to do this. I generally failed using a regular material, maybe an image texture?

Make a plane and delete 2 verts. This will leave you with 2 verts in a strainght line.

Now, subdivide this about 10-12 times, so you have lots of verts. Now assign a material and make it a halo material.

Press render and see the result.

Now, just play with the halo settings until youget the final result you want.

Adding a Blend texture on the halo (with HaloTex) with colorbands for the color is also a good trick to use in this case.

The blender 2.0 guide is available for download right? If it is, you should download it and do the fur-creature tutorial. That would help you set up the colorband.

I wrote a tute (years ago) that I think might help:

Sorry, it sucks a bit – But you should get the idea.

Wow thanks, you guys own. Merry Christmas to all!

Don’t forget you can use radiosity, which will shed light on other objects. Also, you can combine that effect with the halo effect, and for the radio material check ‘env’ so it doesn’t render the material itself. I think I remember doing this before, but I am going to go do a test just to be sure brb.
<edit> ok negatory on the env. It’s rendering a void, where the env object should be, which is no good. I’m thinking there must be a way to get around this,…time to go check out some tuts,…
