Need help w Yafray

I just installed Yafray, and BlendXML, foolishly, having attempted povray at one time, expecting an interface. This is my first problem: It tells me to call up a Dos window…Windows XP does not have an accessible ‘dos’ window as far as I know,…the closest thing is the command window(which might work). Then it says I need to specify the directory for Yafray, (ok so far) then I need to specify my working directory. It gives an example that doesn’t resemble anything on my machine that I know of,…but this should give you an idea of where I’m at with this,…: I don’t even know what a ‘working directory’ is. :expressionless: So,…what I am wanting to know: Is there a resource for complete boneheads such as myself? I realize this is complicated stuff, and I don’t expect anyone to explain it to me, but if you could give me a nudge in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Also, there seems to be NO documentation on the program BlendXML, which is a program that translates blend files into XML files, usable by yafray. It also has no interface, or anything indicating how it is to be used, seemed useful…ONE more thing,…

I don’t seem to be able to save any file paths. I saved my user prefs earlier, ie split screen, etc,…including, render directory, python directory, texture directory, etc., and as usual, none of those things got saved. The only thing that saved was the split screen preference. blarg. Does this sound familiar to anyone? :-?

(and is Yablex something I need?)

Well, I have never used the BlendXML export, so I have no idea on what might be happening there. I use YableX, and will likely start trying out Extractor shortly, as that seems to be the next progression for export to Yafray.

For the command line issues, yes, just open the the command prompt window from your strat menu. Then for the working directory, change directory to your export directory, (i.e. C:\Yablex\Sample), where Sample is the directory you exported your XML file to.

Then you need to type the following command line -> c:\yafray\yafray filename.xml

This should then render your xml file, as long as you have Yafray installed in C:\Yafray. Also, make sure you have your paths set up properly in you settings under control panel for Yafray and Python.

Hope that gives you some help.

Yes that was very helpful as a matter of fact. Thanks. I will get back to tackling it.
