Need Help with Bone Placement

I’ve started to rig a character but I am unsure as to where to place the arm, hip and leg bones?

Placement of Arm Bones
Is it best to have the arm bones start from a point on the spine or can they just start from a point close to the spine and not actually be attached to the spine?

Hip Bones
I was thinking of starting the hip bone from the end of the tailbone but was wondering if this is the correct method and if the bones should be running Horizontal from spine or angled down?

I find that it is best to place arm bones just past the shoulder and hip bones to the sides and up slightly of the tailbone.

Ok Thanks Pirate_man. I tried to do as you explained. Please tell me if my bone placement is correct.

  1. I am using Blender 2.5 and I tried to scale the arm bone. It said to use (Option/Alt + S) to scale bones, but this didn’t work. Am I missing something?

  2. Is the arm bone in the correct position?

  3. Is the hip bone in the correct position or would you place it differently?

Thanks

Ctrl+Alt+S in 2.5 (in edit mode with B-Bones)

For the placement of the bones, I’d advice to look at different anatomy and skeleton reference. Just look where the bones start, which is basically their pivot point.

And that little bone between the pelvis (hip) and upper leg (thigh) is not necessary, since you can have parent bones without connecting them with the child bone: select 2 bones (last one to be the parent), press Ctrl+P and choose Keep Offset

Thanks Sago it worked. And I’ll remove that little bone between the hip and thigh too! Now I just need to figure out how to “mirror” the bones. Thanks for your help.

Would you add all of the bones used in the alien tutorial for a simple foot rig like mine? I selected the shin bone and then added an IK constraint to it. Then in the IK settings I set the following (Target: Armature) (Bone: Foot_L) but it doesn’t seem to be working right. Not sure if I need more bones or if I’ve just set it up wrong.

OK, I’ve updated the foot rig file and added some controllers. I am having some problems knowing which bones I need to parent to each other. Is there a trick to understanding this?
