hi, im currently taking the “Build your own castle” tutorial, and i got to the part (close to the beginning) where they talke about extrusion. when i do that i get an error for extrusioin. and im in edit mode and every thing… help me…please
make sure you have some vertice selected.

“I get an error” is of course a very precise description
but then again, if you try extruding without having selected any vertices the message is “ERROR: Can’t extrude”… which isn’t enormously helpful itself if you’re a beginner!
That’s right, though it should be enourmously obvious that you can’t extrude nothing
i dunno, I suppose in real life you could, although it would just make a much longer nothing…
but i wonder if anyone is thinking of changing the error message here?
Then, we would also need an error message for all other tools if nothing is selected.
I propose to just remove the error message completely
it’s an interesting thought: on the subject of extruding why should it ask you if you really want to extrude if there’s nothing there to extrude?
Maybe it would be better for the interface to be consistent, and always check whether it can carry out the operation before asking for your confirmation… On the other hand I’d rather the programmers kept working on nice toys for me to play with!
this is probably a thread for another forum though!
Yep, although recently, there are some interesting tools being implemented, notably Goofster’s “edge loop cut”, DetectiveThorn’s “Knife” tool and Aphex’s “Occluded Vertices” stuff.
If you want to check a tree with a lot of interesting features (including things like undo and recursive environment map rendering), you should definitely give instinctive-blender (my tree) a try:
