I just purchased this model from cgtrader.com: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/a…/rat-animal–2 It comes as an .obj, so should work in Blender. When importing, there are two files available: “rat.obj” & “rat.mtl.” I imported both, but I have two problems: 1) I can’t find the skeleton/rig in order to pose it. 2) I can’t get the fur to show up in render. Could someone possibly open this in Blender, and provide me with the steps I need to take in order to pose and get the fur to render? I’m attaching the .zip of model to this post. Would be so appreciated! Thank you very much. p.s. .zip won’t upload here, so please download from Dropbox: Thanks so much for the help!
.obj files unfortunately do not hold any armature or animation data- .obj is for mesh and materials only. You should look for .dae or any other file type provided with purchase which could hold animation data.
Edit: for Cycles look at the animal - check your PM box in a minute or so.
Getting the fur to render is simply makinng the 13_default material set to the Rat_diff.bmp (although the hair will then look like squares, so you will have to play around with the transparency and mix nodes to make it look good). As for the rig, an obj file does not contain rig data as far as I know.
Having said that, it is there
go to edit mode
hit A (once or twice) to deselect all.
go to the Material menu and highlight 13_default material and select “select” to highlight the rat
hit P and separate selection
If you hide the rat, you can then see the rig, but you will have to manually create it from the outline given.
I have to go out for a bit now, but I will try out these things, including eppo’s cycles version. May be back with more questions… I can’t thank you both enough. Cheers
Yep… Because what you see what looks like a rig is a plain mesh. Could be used as advanced custom shapes probably to move bones which you’d need to add yourselves.
You should remove the link to the dropbox file, as per the license. And either try getting support from cgtrader, or through the use of screenshots. Why not attempt modeling a rodent yourself? You’ll get plenty of help and avoid any licensing issues.

Have you tried the other formats (.fbx) to see if that includes the rig
