Need help with reflections

I’m working on a boson’s pipe, made of silver, on a polished wood surface. Here’s what I’ve got so far.

I’d like to see some reflection of the pipe in the table, and some environment reflected in the top of the ball. The wood has ray mir applied, the world has an environment map image. I’ve read the wiki on world settings and environment maps, but it’s just not sinking in. I could use a good tutorial right about now, if anyone knows of one for lighting a highly reflective object.

Also, the top on the ball and the top edge of the pipe have this greyish glow. I don’t know how I got it there, and I’d like to get rid of it, or at least be able to play with it’s color. Any ideas?

Comments and critiques are also welcome.

For the environment map, make sure HORI is set in the MAP TO tab/world buttons.

For the tables materials, make sure RayMirror is on, and turn up the RayMir slider.

The grey in the reflection could be from the reflectivity being too low. But it kind of looks like Fresnel. Try turning up RayMir and/or turn down the two fresnal sliders directly below the RayMir slider.

this tutorial could be helpful, especially if you want to play with (and understand) Fresnel:

Ah, thank you. That’s exactly what I was looking for. Merci.
