Need Help with Rigging

Hi, I’ve been wrestling with a project for days now, trying to parent my rig to my model. I keep getting a variety of error messages no matter what I do. I’ve been reading posts for solutions with no luck. Would someone be willing to look at my blend file and see if you can get the rigging to parent? I don’t need to animate this model, only pose it. In the past I’ve been able to easily implement rigging, but this one’s giving me a hard time. You can download the model here: www.dropbox.com/s/6fgt3ba3o1qdlqm/MALE_heroman_RIG.blend?dl=0 WARNING: This is a male model with genitals which I use to create sculptures. Thanks very much for the help.

Hi, I have had a quick look:

You have about 13,000 duplicate vertices in the mesh, Remedy - Edit Mode key W => “Remove Duplicates”.

You have unapplied rotations and scales in the mesh and armature, Remedy - Select Both in Object Mode key ALT+A => “Rotations and Scales”, do ALL edits in Edit mode, including scaling/rotating in future.

Your “Rest” Positions does not match the mesh, just go to Edit Mode for the armature to see this, or click “Rest Pose” button on the armature panel, Remedy - Move the bones in Edit Mode to match the mesh.

You have many Tris in the mesh, I like to use Quads only - this may be another cause.

That is more than enough to cause the problems! I will look at it again later on when I have more time.

Cheers, Clock.

Clockmender, thank you so much for your tips. I will give them a go, and hopefully, have better luck rigging the model. Cheers

Clock, I tried implementing your suggestions. 1) Removed 13,000+ dups (success) 2) Applied R & S in Obj mode (success). 3) Tried to re-arrange bones in Armature edit mode, but they just would not cooperate in that mode. I could not get them to move the way I wanted them to. (failed) 4) I had used Blender’s “convert Tris to Quads” feature before. I thought they’d all been converted. (note: I did not create this model; this is a model I purchased) Tried converting again, but could not find any more tris. I’m sorry, but I still have MUCH to learn about these details. When you have a minute, could you please take another look and see if you can get the rigging working. As stated earlier, I’ve rigged a few different models with no problems. 3D modeling is not my main pursuit, I’m primarily a sculptor/painter. Much appreciate anything you can do. Thanks!

Hi Metrov,I have had a few days off - again, so I will look at your model this week if that’s OK and let you know my thoughts. I have seen your PM’s and will reply in the next days or so - I have sooooo much to catch up on.Cheers, Clock.

Taking a look at your Rigg in all agreement with Clock Minder…

but also… your suing MetaRigg add on…

Realize that you have to hit the ‘genderate’ button to get this all to work…
which appears to might be the whole problem…

go here and and read through this tutorial…

http://blog.digitaltutors.com/rigging-minutes-blenders-rigify-addon/

or watch this video

some where around about 9:00 minutes in he talks about the ‘generate’ thing…
also in this video…

note at about 13:30 he starts to talk about ‘generating’ the Rig…

anywayz…
hope that helps…

Thanks, norvan… I’ve successfully rigged figures with just the “ungenerated” MetaRig, and that worked fine for me. However, it just wouldn’t work for this particular model. Still, I’ll look over the tutorial you suggest. Thanks

Metrov, I am the guy that rigged the rat for you. I am having trouble with this mess too. I have run across this a few times. More than likely they are from the same vender. A vender that sells you the mesh, but before he releases it he writes a script that prevents the easy rigging, either the conventional way or by mettarigg. In all of the meshes I have had trouble with I have noticed these scripts. They can be seen by bring up the text editor while the mesh is opened in blender. Go to the little file icon next to the new button. It will show you the scripts that are in play. I have tried to just delete them but it doesn’t work. I bet if you went back to the vender that sold you the mesh you would find out that it can be rigged but it will cost you. Just my opinion, but I can think of no other reason this is like this.

if you can… post the vender you got the mesh from

Here’s the guy… not sure if he wrote a script, though… his models are pretty cheap (or maybe he makes his money charging for the rigging? LOL):

When you pull in a sculpt like you have, you have to parent the mesh to the armature with “empty groups” to get your vertex groups. . Then you go into weight paint and manually paint the weights. There is no way you can use automatic weights because of the above issues. It’s not going to be very good, but you might be able to get it to work. This is a nice sculpt that you can retopo if you wanted to animate it.
