Need help with smoothing

I could really use someone’s help with a a concept I just can’t seem to grasp. I am trying to smooth out an object so that when I render it, it doesn’t show the angles and looks more rounded. The problem I am having is that whenever I try to smooth the object, it comes out all deformed.

I have included this picture to illustrate. I want the top to be smooth like a cone and the sides to be smooth like a cylinder. I just can’t figure out how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Set the shading to smooth but add an Edge Split modifier. You may need to adjust the smooth angle or mark some of the edges as sharp.

You may want to add a Subsurf modifier below the edge-split to get a smoother appearance.

If you are using blender 2.5 press T for the tool menu, then find the button that says “smooth”.

Thank you for opening my eyes to the edgesplit modifier and the T tool shortcut. I really appreciate the help. Everything works perfectly now.
