Need Help

Attempting to make a pac-man-esque game in which the fat little man runs around collecting cheese puffs while being followed and attacked by bears. My problem is, I’m trying to figure out how to make it so when he is punching or kicking and the two of them collide, the bear dies, but when he is not punching or kicking and they collide, the character dies. Can anyone point me in a direction?
