I’ve been trying to make a hairstyle fairly similar to this but I’ve encountered the problem of it being quite a few polygons to get a full head of hair. I’ve tried to use particles, though I wasn’t able to get the duplicated mesh braid to follow any sort of guide, and just using curve modifier+braid mesh needs 95 of the things to cover the head, which makes it slow and very difficult to adjust because of that. I also tried hair cards, which don’t work because each strand of hair is too 3d to do it. Then I tried a sort of 3D hair card by baking normals and textures from a set of 5 braids onto a cube, but that turned out very obviously to be a transparent rectangle brick with images on the faces.
Next I was thinking of baking normals and textures from one braid to one cylinder and using that, but I’d still need a lot of them and it’d still be slow. Does anyone have any other ways they’d go about doing it and/or adjustments they’d make to things I’ve already tried that I might not have thought of? I’m looking for something relatively easy to adjust later and to be able to do some animation with.
Thanks in advance.
