Net material?

Anyone know how to make net type material.

like a fence or fishing net etc etc

You you should be able to do this with an alpha map. Use an image file of a net with transparent background and map it to the alpha channel.

[FONT=Arial]seems to work ok. gives a netted effect and can actually switch the transperant area, or the net, inside out., tried it on a cube and then only netted the top face, the sides only had the texture stretched over it, so felt limited to cover the whole object.[/FONT]

  1. What do you mean by ‘netting’ - fishnet, mesh, metal grid, tennis net, hair net, grill, chain-link fence…etc - use a ref pic to illustrate.

  2. For what purpose, still render (close up or far away) high poly or low poly for animation, game engine…

  3. If no-one seems to be answering your questions then its a good chance that you’ve not explained it properly rather than people being unhelpful… this is one of the MOST helpful and friendly forums around so be careful of the tone you use ( I understand fustraition but you’re hardly a newbie)

as well as Dichomatt has a thread where he gives you the image texture if you want to use it. Search for ping-pong net

would prefer it to be a mesh object that renders as netting. obviously creating a net using vertices would be crazy and too much time for what could be a little process.

Getting a good net image for the sake of a texture would be great, so thanks PapaSmurf. Even just making the net image with perfect netting would also be crazy time consuming so cool great link mate.

The net material/texture works yes, but is only illusional.

So bottom line desire is = To have a mesh object that renders as net. so if another mesh object was inside of this net it would be caged by the net and still render how its modelled

Example: Ur game character move upon or over what is a boobie trap and find himself hanging from a tree in what is net. Imagine the render as so .

Or of another form, spiderman has traped u in webbing and ur covered in web, (webnet same diff)

so want it to be mesh/ not material. thanks hope explains better

Seems like the challenge has already been discussed.

will try these techniques at home let ya know what happens.

as a challenge put a sphere inside another sphere an see if the outside one can net the inside, so its clothing it.

ok heres a netting experiment close to the desired efect i was looking for.

hopefully the attachment works.

but was based on the attachment of Papasmurfs link in the TableTennis forum.

so credit goes to him. Used his 2 Wood textures idea, but just played around with the settings a bit.

Instead i tried the RayTranperancy rather than ZTransp, seems to come out clearer.

In the MapInput panels, 1 wood tex is based all down the X’s the other down the Z’s,not sure the technical title of this but kinda how it gets layed over the faces? anyone?

To get more netting criss cross’s i increased the sizes to about 10, refer to blend file

and of course MapTo requires “alpha” on to give the transperant effect.
