New Computer Parts

Well recently i bought a new PSU because i got a new PNY GeForce 7600 GS 256mb Graphics card which was being a bit dodgy. I guessed i needed a new PSU as i only had 250W and was running loads off it. While there i also bought a nice shiny new case. Anyway to cut a long story short while moving my computer over, i broke my processor (P4 478pin 2 pins have snapped off, wont boot up any more)
So i visit a computer shop, after looking at a Motherboard on the internet which claimed to be able to accomodate a Intel Core 2 Duo chip, and have an AGP slot and also support old DDR333 memory. When i got there they told me that they didnt have that MoBo in stock and even if they did it wouldnt accomodate the new Core 2 Duo chips. So basically, if i want to upgrade to this lovely new processor, i would haveto buy a new MoBo, Processor, RAM, and AGP card. I think they mentioned i might be able to get an AMD 64 3400+ and MoBo which would hold AGP graphics and DDR333. But i dont want that i want an Intel Core 2 Duo. I was just wondering what you guys think i should do. If i have to get a nearly complete new system, i will order it off the net (cheaper) and make it a really good one (Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB Ram, 7000 or 8000 series Graphics Card).
I hope i will not have to do this and you might be able to suggest some alternatives for me. Any help / advice / comments are most welcome.

If you want Core 2 Duo then that is the way you will have to go.

However the AMD X2 chips compete pretty well $/£ for performance with the Core 2 Duos the last time I looked (use http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html and the price from your chosen source to check), and you can get a socket AM2 m/b with AGP for sure, but you will probably still need DDRII memory (533+)

So if you could use some more memory anyway, and want to keep your nice graphics card, that could be the way to go.
