I’m just going to throw this out there and see what happens. Let’s say I have $300.00 to spend on a motherboard and processor, any suggestions on what would be the best for my money?
honestly NOBS but this is the best combo (maybe not the exact combo coz i live in a different country with different prices)
get a 2.6-2.8 Ghz P4 with 800Mhz FSB (must be 800Mhz)
get a mobo with dual channel DDR 400Mhz Memory (DDr 3200)
i sugest you ask the question at www.tomshardware.com they will answer your questions and they have all the benchmarks you need

Personnally, I prefer the AMD chips, they are significantly less expensive and unless you can afford the latest and greatest Intell, will ussually out perform an Intel also. Since you’re on a budget, it’s the best option.
I use Asus motherboards and have NEVER had a problem, so I can recommend them. It will set you back about $125 for an Asus, about average for a quality mobo. Tyan, MSI, and Gigabyte also make good mobo’s.
I recommend spending for quality on the mobo, then getting the fastest Athalon XP you can afford after that. A cheap Mobo will cause a lot of problems, especially when it’s time to update the bios. CPU’s, on the other hand, are easier to upgrade when you can afford it, and a good Mobo won’t be “obsolete” as soon as the CPU.
umm it was to my belief that an 800Mhz FSB intel P4 2.8Ghz with dual channel DDR400 running at a syncronized data transfer rate was better than even the best AMD 64bit chip.
but thats IMO. i havn’t looked at recent benchmarks.
i choose a P4 1 year ago becasue it was better price per performance, i think intel has been better PPP for a long time now.
the 800Mhz FSB, and the 400Mhz Dual Channel DDR are runnign the same speed
(quad pumped p4 chip runs at 200Mhz, DDR 400 runs at 200Mhz, this means they are syncronized and offer greater memory performance, unlike the 133Mhz FSB, running 166Mhz memory of my computer)
i’ll go check out the lastest benchmarks and say which is still better.

here are some benchmarks
i hope that give some insight into intel kicking butt LOL
p.s. openGl and application benchmarks are all i got, here are the links to the articles

what do you think of this – ASUS P4C800 Deluxe for $168
and a Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800 for $231
thats $100 over your budget but yes its a fantastic deal.
BTW you will need to buy 400Mhz DDR ram to get the full benifit of speed, if it is an upgrade using existing ram you may be a bit disapointed by the perforance increase untill you buy more ram that is.
and its dual channel ram so you need to get 2x512 for 1Gb or 2x256 for 512Mb etc… you can’t just put in a single stick of 512Mb unless you want a performance loss LOL
but yes that is a very good Mobo and Chip

what are benchmarks? all i see is there logo…
yes they were there but THG has a revolving system where i presume they re-name the images and change the links within the article to stop people using their benchmarks
the link to the article is still fine, and the benchmarks were there for a good 1 or 2 days so you are jsut slow.
