You mean that the keys are in not-qwerty places? (I almost wrote “not in the usual” places, but then I remembered the azerty that is used in France (IIRC))
Man, that must be really awkward to use
rather, but i can easily see how it is superior…
wasn’t the whole reason behind qwerty (its really easy to type that, try it :D) to slow down people, so the typewriters could keep up with them?
no, on typewriters they used qwerty becaus the things that slam the inkt on the paper are easilly ordered and don’t get stuck or something…I think…

That was quite what he said.

well that isn’t slowing people down, it’s just a mechanical trick to keep the slammers from getting stuck.
Roel
yes they were created to SLOW PEOPLE DOWN.
as said earlier in crap words.
typewritters would often type to fast for the machine (since they were mechanical) and this would cause each letter th slam into the previous letter in the typewritter. this would cause a jam in the machine. so the solution was to change the position of the keys to force the typists to move their fingers a maximum distance between every letter.
thus slowing things down.
dvorak keyboards do the opposite and are designed for maximum speed.

Also, the letters of “typewriter” are all on the top row of the qwerty keyboard, so when the salesperson was showing off the brand new typewriters, they could easily type “typewriter” without having to learn how to type properly - just the top row.
Hey GFX you sure it’s the new keyboard mate?
Sonix.
Damn, I really would like to try out dvorak-keyboard, but learning it would be hell, as I can’t even write with 10 fingers on standard qwerty :<
Add to that, I don’t have the money to spend on it…
Hey GFX Idiot, is it more intuitive to use than qwerty? How about sharing us your experiences with it?
ok, heres the low-down:
-
diddnt buy a new keyboard. i told windows this was a dvorak and popped the letters off and put them in the right places.
-
its slow atm, but i can see how it is better. the majority of words are typed with alternating fingers, with common vowels on the seft home row, and common consonants on the right. (because most words go v-c-v-c etc)
-
the most frequently used letters are typed on the home row, then the top row, then the bottom row, which are easier to access in that order.
in conclusion, i think its worth it. if you can type super fast now, maybe dont bother, but otherwise why not give it a shot? you can always go back…
