new mesh partially based on existing

I need a way to create a new mesh which is partially based on an existing one.
I have a human model and need to create a tight fitting T-Shirt for it.
I was thinking if it is possible to somehow “paint” that shirt on the mesh - which should result in a new T-shirt-mesh.
Hope this makes sense…

How could I do this?

My first try would be:

  • mark the faces of the body, on which you what the T-shirt to be
  • duplicate them
  • scale them up slightly
  • rework the borders and add some details by adding loop-cuts etc.
    maybe detach them after duplicating, to get them into a new mesh for better editing.
