New System questions

Thanks for the response. Did you try the viewport benchmark test in my second reference (add catmull-clark subsurf to cube, enable VBO [vertex buffer objects], and disable double-sided in object data)? Try animating the cube to make a full 180 deg rotation in 24 frames, then set channel in the graph editor to linear extrapolation. See what fps you get when you hit ALT+A. Strangely enough, I had to add 2 subsurf modifers (1st one set to 6, the second set to 2) before I got slow frame rates on my ancient gpu.

Hi thanks for your response. Sorry I didn’t explain my question better… I was actually referring to my second reference in post #21 in this thread. But it’s not really a blend file… you have to just add subsurf modifiers to the default cube. It’s probably not a very intense benchmark. I remember seeing (I think it was on Anandtech or Tom’s Hardware) when they were benchmarking a massive file: an Imperial Star Destroyer. Now that would be a good viewport benchmark test!

I enabled vbo, although I’m not sure where double sided is, what is that?

CPU: 8 minor lag, 9 lag
GPU: 8 no lag, 9 minor lag, 10 lag

Now I’m actually adding 2 subsurf mods, as it seems it only goes up to 6. So the first is 6 and second is 2,3 or 4.

Okay, thanks very much for doing that test! The “double sided” checkbox is in the Object data tab (to the left of the material tab), under the “Normals” heading. Though to be honest, I’m not sure what double sided lighting or VBOs are, let alone their impact on performance. I know on my extremely old ATI Radeon card, enabling VBOs causes objects to irratically disappear!
