New Years Eve' Shell Effect

Hey,

I would like to do a little animation about a new years eve shell flying up and exploding, something like this: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MlS6fGz-GNE/THJb84ktO0I/AAAAAAAAAcY/1iVuX2rvMWc/s400/Display_Shell.gif (not that big and good looking  it’s just to help you know what I mean)

I have set up a little scene with a rocket or “shell” (don’t know how thats called in english) flying in the air and exploding. I made all those little “light flashs” with a particle system and spheres as objects.

Now the difficult part:

I’m not very good at materials/compositing and so on, so does anyone have an idea how to make those spheres glow like in the video? Again it don’t have to be exact like the image, I would be happy if they are just glowing somehow and I got a base to continue with…

Thanks for your link, it helped a lot. I created a little node setup and I’m quit satisfied.

I got only one problem:

There are two particle system on two different renderlayers. The first, outer layer should be shining white, the other, inner one shining red.

When I try to mix these two layers at the end to connect them with the composite node, they’re not just combined to one image, but either the first layer gets all the settings from the second one or reversed.

How can I connect both renderlayers without getting distorted by the other one?

Judging from that screenshot, you need to set your final Mix node to use the Alpha channels (check the small button), and it needs to have a factor of “1”.
