Newb question: what am I doing wrong

I’ve been only working with blender a couple weeks now and learning from video tutorials, but I haven’t seen how to fix this problem I’m having.

I’ve been animating just by moving my rig, insert keyframe loc/rot. Rotate the rig a little, insert keyframe again for rotation…etc

I have a simple mesh character I made sitting down with his head down like he’s asleep. I have him raise his head then lower it then raise it again, which all works fine. I want him to stand up out of the chair, after that. So I insert a key frame AFTER he finally “wakes up” to start moving his body and legs to stand up. But what happens when I play the animation is that from Frame 1 as his head is starting to move he is sloowllllly starting to move his legs through the entire animation and not after he wakes up like I want him to.

I’m sure its something simple I just haven’t figured out yet. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Oh I think I’m using the most current version of blender if that makes a difference.

At the point when you want him to wake up add a keyframe of his legs in their rest position. Otherwise his legs are moving from the rest position on frame 1 to its next keyframe over the duration between these points

That’s what I was going to advise too.
