Newbie question: How to animate torus rolling in on itself

Hello I’m a 3dsMax user and today is my first time trying to animating something in Blender…
anyway how do you how to animate a torus rolling in on itself?
I’ve tried bending a tube and using the simple deform modifier,
I was hoping it would deform the polygons over the shape of the torus,
i need something to have the surface polygons moving around itself… and help would be great

animation nodes maybe??

Probably the easiest way to do it is to make a torus out of a curve object and animate the tilt of the curve handles.
