I’m very new to Blender (and 3D modelling), so for one of my first experiments, I decided to play about with some EnvMap’ing on a simple object (a ring). But before I even got that far, I noticed something quite odd, that I’m hoping someone can help me with…
I created a UVSphere, chopped off the top and the bottom, extruded what was left, scaled it up and out, extruded that, and scaled it down and out, to create a basic ‘ring’ shape, then SubSurf’d that. I put this ring on a plane (yes, it is on the plane) and added a Spotlight.
Now, there seems to be something wrong with the shadowing in this scene - light seems to be coming from somewhere under the ring (remember - I said the ring is on the plane, this even happens if I have the plane in the middle of the ring).
I figure this will affect the envmap process, and it’s really starting to annoy me now, so can anyone give me any pointers as to what is going on here?
This is due to the ClipStart and ClipEnd setting of your spot, rise the firs, lower the latter, so that the ring is in the range. You can tell by the spot purple line between the dots.
This is also a question, so I hope if you don’t mine if I move the topic to a more pertinent forum
They were probably the only two buttons I didn’t press whilst trying to figure out how to fix this problem. They did the trick - thanks
And thanks for moving the thread - I hadn’t even seen the “Questions & Answers” forum.
Just wanted to thank you both for welcoming me - even if blender’s interface isn’t initally welcoming, it’s community sure is
Anyway - I just thought I’d post a quick update, to show you where I’ve gone with this, thanks to your help. I’m not 100% happy with it, but I’ve done what I set out to do, and now I’m itching to cut my teeth on bigger projects.
Looks very good. One tip, you may know this already but I’ll say it any how. A very important but often over looked aspect of good Env is the center of your object so before you render highlight you object or Tab out of the edit mode, go to your edit buttons and click on “Center New” button. I’m not saying your ring needs this but it can be a source or frustration if forgotten.
Very nice picture. But I do have one question for everyone that answered this post. Thrillho said he was using envirnonment maps. I thought env maps game you a reflection of the surrounding “environment” to whatever object you applied them to.
As I look at his image I see the gold ring ( which let me say again looks very nice, for someone just starting, much better then I have accomplished after using blender for 2 years) but there is no reflection of the wood texture of the plane or anything else. Am I missing something?
