Node mesh help, multiple materials

How can I use shader nodes on a certain part of my mesh without affecting the whole mesh

You can make multiple material groups on the same mesh. 1st you add your first material like normal, then go into edit mode, and select just the faces that you want the other material on, and add a new material slot in the materials panel, then a new material, then, press the “assign” button.
But do it in the materials panel, not the nodes editor.
