It’s going a bit off topic, but along these lines I always wondered why OSL wasn’t pushed more in Blender? I tried it ages ago when I first came from 3dsMax, but it was laughably slow to compile, and just use generally. Maybe it’s better implemented now, and fully supported on GPU?
Well its cycles only and CPU driven.
I just looked it up, and it does seem that you can render OSL scripts using the GPU to some extent. How it works, and how you implement it, I have no idea, but apparently it can be done.
Found this. Seems it’s CPU only.

Later versions like 2.3.4 | 2.3.5 now have an infinite scroll issue.
seems like calling it an Alpha would fit better.
*wrote more in detail within the appropriate discord channel.
I thought it was supported on GPU? I’m sure I tried it with GPU (because GPU is supported with Arnold and OSL) And if not, then this is what I mean about it not being developed more.
Either way, seems like a waste of a great open source shader resource.
there was prior some work done to get OSL to work on gpu.
The main issue he seems to be concerned with now is the tablet pressure issue. Hopefully when he gets a tablet and solves it he will move on to other things.
I suppose the good thing is that all the other tools and features are in place so once these compatibility issues are sorted it should be full steam ahead on getting all the other tools working well ![]()
Ah yes, I thought so.
I just read a bit into it. Seems there was added GPU support
over Optix in blender 3.5.
From this, you have to use Optix, though they’re still rendered by the CPU even then.
…I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t even know where I’m at anymore.

Yeah, maybe ask @Secrop what the specifics are. He’s using OSL in blender afaik. Wrote a short shader and tested it with open shading language turned on and device is set to GPU, set it up in the shader and it works. Will have to take a look at my script editor now though. Its crashing when loading templates… ![]()
I’ve been weighing up getting a large screen tablet these last 2 weeks. It’s between the Huion and the XP Pen, but I really can’t decide. I keep jumping between the 2, day to day. ![]()
Pretty much all the useful, honest reviews/comparisons are by 2D artists.
I’m particularly interested now that Nomad desktop is here. I think that Nomad would be the perfect program for one of these tablets. An interesting factor is the touchscreen with Nomad. Zbrush doesn’t support this for viewport nav, but it looks like Nomad does. I would prefer a 24 inch, but only the 19 inch supports the touchscreen, and that’s only on the Huion.
Anyone have any experience or opinions with these brands or tablets?
My XP Pen Artist 24 Pro was the best purchase I’ve ever made. I’ve been very happy with the brand, I’ve had a few tablets and none have ever had any issues.
Yeah I had both of them and honestly I like the XP Pen a bit more than Huion. Their laminated displays are pretty cool, almost no parallax, also driverwise I was rather happy with the xp one.
Yes, sadly lots of big software titles went the subscription route, requiring you to perpetually rent it and never actually own a single version.
Yes, I honestly think that - for the most part - these subscription-only models were the worst things to happen to 3D programs.
Yes, I’m leaning towards the 24. Have you got the newer gen 2 version?
I just read over at the Nomad Discord that Quad Remesher for Nomad desktop will be handled by Exoside. Stéphane, the Nomad dev, will not take a cut from the proceeds, and it’s unknown yet how much Exoside will ask for Quad Remesher integration into Nomad desktop…
-
In the best case scenario, it will have the same price as QR for Nomad iPad, which is something like $ 15 or so, last time I read about it.
-
In the other scenario, QR will have a price comparable to the Blender add-on variations, like Perpetual Indie or Perpetual Pro. More info here.
If you already own a perpetual QR license for Blender, you could consider switching between Nomad and Blender for quad retopo.
Yes, I read that too. My guess is that it will be full price for Nomad too, as it will be a full desktop program. Still, well worth it, imo. I can’t imagine not having access to a proper quadremesher.
Isn’t there a multi-program licence too? So you could use it in Blender and Nomad?
Absolutely. It’s an essential tool for any serious sculptor. ![]()
Not that I know of. Maybe that’s possible with the subscription option? ![]()
