Nor and emitter textures

Is it just me, or can a material not have a nor texture and be an emitter at once? I can get a material to be bumpy with a procedural nor texture, and I can get it to emit light either by changing the emit setting of material or mapping a texture to emit, but I can’t seem to get a material to both emit and be bumpy. Any ideas anyone? I’m using Blender 2.46.

It works for me to have both a Nor mapped texture and Emit on the same object. Bare in mind that using a texture to effect the Normals creates false shadows on the surface of the object to give the illusion of surface texture. Emit, increasing the brightness of the materials color. You may simply have the Emit so high that it is washing out the shadows for the Normal texture.

I was kinda hoping that the nor would still show up even when the only light source was the material itself, but I guess that doesn’t work. I take it w/out another light source, there’s nothing to create those fake shadows.

You are correct. Without another lamp, there is nothing to create the shadows on the emitting object. Do you have an example of what you are trying to achieve? Maybe there is another way to go about it.

I was trying to evenly illuminate a mesh, but I found a hemi worked well enough. As long as I keep the mesh and lamp on the same layer and let the hemi only light up that one layer, it should be fine. The mesh won’t glow, but having it lit up like this is really the same thing. But thanks anyway.

If you want a Glow effect, look into using the Glow node in the Composite nodes. With the hemi light lighting the mesh, you should get a good result from the Glow node.

Thanks. I’ll have to look into that. I’m getting better with nodes, but i’m still not too good with the.
