Normal Map - odd behaviour

I have a disk i’m trying to apply a normal map to one face of. I have unwrapped only the face I want to map to and have applied the normal map - however the normal map appears to be affecting faces that I haven’t unwrapped too which doesn’t happen with diffuse colour textures.

Without the normal map applied - the edge of the disk is smooth shaded as you would expect - however as soon as I apply the normal map, the edge faces go dark and look like they are sharp shaded.

Anyone know what is going on?

how many mat do you have there 2 or 1 or more ?

did u make one mat/unwrap for the top only ?

would be easier with file may be

Two common mistakes here…

1 - the data type in the image node is set to ‘color’, you want to change it to ‘non-color’.
2 - You wouldn’t really string a normal map through the bump node, but rather through the separate normal map node.

One material - and unwrapped only the top face.

better use 2 mat one for the side and one for the top part

and use non color for normal map image and the normal node

but depends also what you do with it or what other images you use
like spec or AO image color, image ect

Thanks - that did the trick.

ohhh moony… forgetting to use the ‘normal map’ node with tangent maps!!
you’re loosing qualities

I havent done a lot with normal maps - tend to focus on procedurals…must be out of practice LOL
