Normal texture causes grid appearance in render

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to create a water texture using a cloud texture, and having it influence the normal geometry. However, under certain settings, in the render, this causes there to be a grid-like appearance mixed in with the displacement, like this:

This texture is just applied to a plane. I’ve tried subdividing the mesh, smoothing it, and creating a subsurface, but nothing changes, I think this has something to do with the texture. Has anyone seen this before, or knows what might be going on? I’ve attached a .blend file if anyone would be willing to take a look.

me thinks this is a bug :confused:

have you tried increasing the noise depth? probably won’t do anything but you might try just to see.
